About Weapons & Your Requirements:

All survivalists need the tools necessary to ensure their survival. The first and best tool, of course, is your brain and your body. Keeping fit - both mentally and physically - means you will always have at least one tool to help you survive.

When it comes to weapons, you have to decide whether or not you are capable of taking a life - human or animal - either in defense of yourself and your family, or in the acquisition of those things you and your family need to survive. When making this decision, you must consider extremes and not the normal, civilized scenarios we are accustomed to.

Pacifism is not a survival trait. At best, the practice of pacifism places you at the mercy of all those who do not share your philosophy. At worst, it will relegate you and your family to slavery or martyrdom. If you can live with that knowledge and accept responsibility (when the time comes) for the abuse and probable death of yourself and your family, then you have no need for weapons or self defense skills.

I am not a pacifist, though I prefer a peaceful co-existence with others. I do enjoy eating animals. I do not enjoy killing them for food or sport, though I accept that every time I eat animal flesh, some animal had to die and some person had to kill it. I am grateful to both. I honor the one for its sacrifice and the other for their actions on my behalf. I don't agonize over it, because I would do it myself if I had to. I might not enjoy it, but I would do it.

I would, however, feel a great deal of remorse in taking a human life - even in self defense where the consequences of NOT taking that life would mean giving up my own or surrendering the life of others near and dear to me. I would feel remorse - but I would do what is necessary and I am willing to suffer that mental anguish that surely must come after the deed is done.

This is not a flippant statement or a facade of bravado. I have looked deep within my own psyche and considered all of the psychological and spiritual ramifications inherent in making this decision. I was raised as a Catholic and my military profession was that of a medic - a healer, a saver of lives. Yet, in defense of self or family, I will take the life of one who threatens my own.

To me, "life" is a gift of responsibility - first to myself, second to my family, and third to my friends and community. I believe that we are all responsible for our lives and our actions, both good and bad. I believe it is our duty to make the best that we can of our lives, and to help others close to us to make the best of their lives. I believe that this duty compels the strong to protect the weak and, where the strong abuse that strength - that power - it is our responsibility to stand against it.

A human being who preys upon those weaker than themselves is no different than a rogue lion who has developed a taste for human flesh. If such a lion were about to pounce upon you, one of your children, one of your friends - or any other human - would you hesitate to kill it, given the means and the opportunity?

If you cannot bring yourself to reply in the affirmative regarding a rogue, man-eating lion, then you have no need for a weapon. If you can, then you need to consider why you might hesitate to apply the same force against a rogue, man-killing human.

The lion kills out of instinct - either fear or hunger - and there is no aspect of "ego" involved. How much worse is the human who abuses, rapes, steals from, enslaves or kills another human, not out of instinct or self-preservation, but as an exercise of power and intellect? One who takes some or all that another needs to survive simply because they have the power to do so? One who forces others to do for them what they lack the will (but not the ability) to do for themselves? These type of people are evil. The lion is not evil, yet we would consign it to death, and rightfully so.

Of course, deadly force should ever be the last and final resort. Avoidance, evasion, and prevention should always be the first choice. There is the possibility of trapping the threat and removing it (incarceration), or driving it away with a superior show of force and ability. When and if, however, it comes down to an unavoidable confrontation, you must be absolutely certain that you are willing and able to apply the necessary force to make sure that it is a final confrontation. If you do not ensure this or cannot commit to this, it will inevitably return to haunt you.

Even an animal driven by pure instinct will not long respect idle threats. A starving pack of wild dogs may be cowed once, twice, or even half-a-dozen times by brave shouts and waving arms. Perhaps another half-dozen times they will back off from thrown sticks and rocks. Eventually, however, they will circle about, find your weak point, and attack. They will ignore your screams and pitiful attempts to frighten them, and they will go for your throat.

If the feeble mind of a wild animal will not be dissuaded by threats not carried to the ultimate conclusion, how do you suppose a ruthlessly intelligent human predator will react? They may back off, initially, but if you have what they want and you show them that you are unwilling or incapable of warding them off with deadly force - the only force they understand - then they will be back. They will take you by the throat. They will take whatever they want.

In the civilized world, weapons are often used to force others (usually those without weapons) to do what they are told. This has become something of a "fait accompli." An automatic response brought on by Hollywood (fictional) bravado and television shows, reinforced by bad law and bad courts which prosecute Citizens for defending themselves and their homes. In the civilized world, it is not always necessary (or advisable) to follow through on a threat of force - the threat is sufficient to drive the bad guys to easier prey or hold them for "the authorities."

In the survival world, however, a threat is less than meaningless unless it is followed through. The threat of force not carried through is viewed as a weakness, a vulnerability, a hesitance to be taken advantage of. If you pull a weapon in the survival world, you must intend - and convey that intention - to use it. If you brandish a weapon at someone, you have committed yourself to using it. If you use your weapon against someone, you must do so skillfully, immediately, and completely. In other words, if you attack someone, you must put them down.

A weapon is not a bargaining tool - it is a killing tool. It is not used to compel, it is used to kill. It is not an instrument of restraint - it is an instrument of destruction. A wounded man or animal is more likely to come at you with twice the ferocity, than they are to slink away. Your goal is not to "wing" them into submission, but to kill them dead. If you cannot wrap your mind around this concept and accept it, then you should neither carry nor own - and certainly not brandish a weapon.

SSRsi's Rules of Weapons:

1.) Weapons are not toys:
They should not be handled as such. They should not be played with, twirled, passed about, or handled with anything less than deadly respect.
2.) All weapons are "loaded" - especially when they are not:
a.) More people die accidentally from "unloaded" weapons than loaded ones. Only a fool handles a "loaded" weapon casually. It's the fool who mishandles what they believe to be an unloaded weapon that gets people killed.
b.) And it's not just guns - people do the darndest things horsing around with bows and blades, as well. Even when they are not misusing them - i.e., cleaning, sharpening or adjusting them - people tend to forget that their weapon is ready and able to inflict serious injury if they aren't paying attention.
3.) A weapon is not a piece of jewelry or a status symbol:
The function of a weapon is to kill - not to entertain or to awe. Wearing a weapon in the open or openly carrying a weapon assumes that you are ready, willing and intending to use it. It invites as much trouble as it is likely to repel. The typical bad guy has the need to show just how bad he really thinks he is. Sporting a weapon - of any kind - is likely to build the need in a bad guy to challenge you. Then it's time to put up or shut up. If they believe you are all show and no go, you are going to be backed into a corner.
4.) Never pull out a weapon unless you intend to use it:
Weapons are tools to be used, not shared or passed around for approval. They are not pacifiers to be pulled out and fondled when you feel a bit edgy.
