About Food Storage & Food Requirements:

Under survival conditions (other than simply sitting in a shelter), the average 15-65 year old male will need between 4700 and 7000 calories per day to maintain a healthy body and be able to perform all of the necessary tasks of an untamed, non-civilized self-reliant existence. For females, the caloric requirements point at 3300-4500, but I suspect the calculations for females are chauvinistically gender-biased, rather than purely scientifically based. For survivalist/self-reliance type women, I would bump this up by 500-1000 calories, respectively. (3800-5500 cpd)

I understand that these figures are well above the averages for a civilized existence. I am sure that you all understand the energy requirements in a post-event world will require you to expend at least twice as much energy as you do in your normal daily life under current conditions. Plan accordingly when figuring food and water requirements. DO NOT SELL YOURSELF SHORT! Stock for life, not for existence.

You may cut the above figures by 40-70% if you are simply going to sit in a shelter and wait things out. But remember - some day you will have to emerge from that cozy little shelter, and then the real work begins. Will you be prepared? What if there are no grocery stores, government aid and/or charity soup kitchens to rely on when you emerge? What if there are only starving and desperate survivors willing to do whatever it takes to take whatever you have? These survivors will have outlasted the weak and the stupid and, most likely, the kind-hearted. They will be faster, smarter and more ruthless and desperate than the average drek. If you are not a part of a survival group, linked to other survival families, or living well concealed in the boonies, you will have to fend for yourself against all the others who haven't planned for survival. They won't be civilized anymore. They won't be reasonable. They won't care that their survival may mean the end of yours. There will be more of them than there are of you.

With this in mind, you must expect - no matter where you are holed up - that an overwhelming force will eventually come upon you and yours. Storing your supplies in the open, in a central location, easily accessed for inventory and rotation is lazy and stupid. It is, quite simply, dumber than not stocking up at all. You would be better off spending the money on mercenary skills, weapons and body armor, planning to take what you need from others. But that's not very nice, and not everyone has the evil capacity to plan this sort of lifestyle. So be smart, when it comes to food (and other supplies) storage.

Keep only what you need to survive for 3-10 days outside your secured locations. Losing this much will be painful, but may not end in death (depending on your "guests"). If you are forced to give up these supplies, put up enough resistance to sell the fact that it's "all you have left to survive on." Once they leave with your stuff, you will have to make sure that they will not be back, or you may be forced to relocate as well. If they come back and find you in none the worse shape, with another 3-10 day supply of goods, anyone with half a brain will suspect the existence of a cache - and they will force the location out of you, or simply watch you for a few days until you access it. Then they will take it all.

False walls, floor wells, and other caches:

Where and how you stash your stuff will depend upon location and your ability as a craftsperson. A simple method of stashing goods is through misdirection. If you have containers clearly labeled as something most folks would not consider essential to survival, you might stash items in a false bottom/interior. The problem with this is that it is hard to tell what folks find valuable. What might seem to you as entirely useless, may prove to be exactly what the other guy is looking for. Don't forget to factor in the suspicious and/or curious nature of bad people. If they see what appears to be an oversupply of seemingly useless materials, chances are they will be compelled to investigate. At the very least, you need to have a good (plausible) excuse for storing the stuff in the first place.

Hidden rooms are good, and relatively easy for most folks, provided it isn't obvious that there should be a room where none is apparent. The real trick is finding a location for the hidden room that makes it appear that all available space is already being used - and the most difficult aspect of maintaining this miracle of concealment is construction of the access port.

Access to all but long-term caches requires considerable thought: Entry & exit should be concealed from outside view; The mechanics of opening and closing the access must not leave tell-tale signs that there IS an entry there; There must not be a traffic pattern in the floor/ground which obviously leads to (and/or through) what appears to be an illogical dead end; The construction of the entry must be solid, resisting cursory examination by tapping/pushing; when closed, the access must be seamlessly invisible. The best places for concealed entry are the interior walls of storage/linen closets which are obviously used daily, a back or side wall of a shower (not used, but made to appear as used) stall, or the old favorite - built-in bookcases.  Alternately, you could build concealed access into the floor of an attic or the ceiling of a basement. These are quite good for concealment, but they suck for stocking and removal of supplies. They do, however, necessitate having a second floor or basement to work with.

Double walls, with storage space between them are easy to build and even easier to provide the illusion that it is a simple wall of normal construction and thickness. The problem lies in accessing the interior without leaving tell-tales.

Floor wells are the easiest - using the joist space for storage - provided you have the skill to keep the floor from compressing, squeaking or springing back up when it is walked on. Wall to wall carpeting makes it even easier, as long as you take care to replace the carpeting convincingly every time you peel it up.

The same care must be taken when storing a cache at a bolt-hole location. Unless the bolt-hole itself is well concealed, you SHOULD NOT store your survival supplies inside. You never know who will already be there when you arrive, and whether or not they are going to be friendly. Even if they are friendly, they may not respect your claim of ownership - finders-keepers and all that. Bolt hole caches should be near, but not within visual range of any occupants within the shelter, nor easily observed from others, outside the shelter.

Outdoor caches: Remember not to carve out an obvious path to the cache unless the path continues onward to a logical location. If the path does continue on, you must contend with the possibility of a lost or curious passer by discovering your cache either while you are accessing it or accidentally, when startled off of the path.

This allows you to store far more food in a limited space than you could ever do with traditional grocery store foods and you don't have to worry about spoilage. Security Unit - One Year's Food for Two People only $400 more!

Provident Pantry Traditional One Year Food Supply of #10 Cans When planning your food storage, you should consider several criteria. Are the foods you store delicious? Are they nutritious enough to supply your family with the vitamins and minerals they need to stay healthy? Can they be prepared conveniently during an emergency? Are the foods you choose to store provident? In addition to these questions, you should also consider what your family eats on a regular basis, and what they like to eat. If you're like many families, you probably have some of the basic food storage items set aside already. The Provident Pantry Traditional One Year Food Supply helps you build on that by adding variety, nutrition, and convenience to your food storage. The Traditional One Year Food Supply contains some grains, legumes, and milk, but it also includes many of the essentials often left off of food storage shelves, including margarine, eggs, cheese, fruit, vegetables, and more. Food from four of the basic food groups is included in this one year supply. The traditional year supply offers more than 1,200 calories and 50 grams of protein per day for one person. Every can in this supply was carefully selected to provide you with the maximum amount of food and nutrition for your food storage dollar. 46 different items - 300 pounds of food

Whole Grain Oat Groats - Bulk 50 Pound Bag Oat groats can be cooked and served as cereal, or prepared in the same manner as rice and used as a side dish or in a dish such as a salad or stuffing. When steamed and flattened with huge rollers, oat groats become regular rolled oats (also called old-fashioned oats). They take about 15 minutes to cook. Quick-cooking rolled oats are groats that have been cut into several pieces before being steamed and rolled into thinner flakes. Though they cook in about 5 minutes, many think the flavor and texture are never quite as satisfying as with regular rolled oats. Old-fashioned oats and quick-cooking oats can usually be interchanged in recipes. Instant oats, however, are not interchangeable because they're made with cut groats that have been precooked and dried before being rolled. This precooking process so softens the oat pieces that, after being combined with a liquid, the mixture can turn baked goods such as muffins or cookies into gooey lumps.

To be exact, there are three different coffee plants, all related: Coffea Arabica from Ethiopia, known from prehistoric times. Coffea Robusta from Congo, discovered in 1898. Coffea Liberica (Coffea Canephora) from Western Africa, of no great importance in coffee trade. The first coffee plant of economic importance was Coffea Arabica. It grows to the height of 2-3 feet but the cultivated plants are cut to the height of 1-2 feet to get more width. The leaves of the coffee are lustrous dark green with lighter underside. The flowers emerge from the branches together with the leaves. The white coffee flower has five petals and a scent resembling that of jasmine. The coffee berries are cherry-sized and green at first, turning dark red later on. The ripening takes eight months. The coffee plant can simultaneously have flowers and berries in all stages of development. The coffee tree requires temperature of 65-80 degrees F. Thus, the coffee tree is a tropical plant. It is not a coincidence that coffee and humans thrive in the same temperatures. Our original home is the same - Africa. It is quite possible that Eve and her contemporaries (about 2.8 million years ago) munched coffee beans for pleasure. In the home, the Coffee Plant should be grown in a filtered light window. Keep evenly moist, not wet or dry. Fertilize regularly with a general purpose house plant fertilizer. The plant you will receive is growing in a 4" pot and is about 8" tall. Fruits (Miscellaneous)
Pomegranate 40 Seeds/Seed - Punica granatum Punica granatum has been one of the longest cultivated fruit trees in the old world, highly prized for its flavorful fruit. A native of Asia, the name Punica is the old name for the city of Carthage. It seems that the fruit was once known as the "apple of Carthage." The latin binomial for this species was taken from 'pomuni granatum' (seeded apple in Latin) - the name of this plant during the Middle Ages. This deciduous shrub typically grows to 20 feet tall, is very twiggy, clad with small shiny leaves, held in small groups, giving a slightly 'tufted' look. In spring these emerge a bronzy-green color, and in autumn they turn golden yellow. The scarlet or red-orange flowers have a very conspicuous, red colored calyx and (inferior) ovary, giving them a sort of 'carnation' look. The flower gives was and the ovary enlarges to produce a subglobose fruit 3-5 inches in diameter, becoming a deep wine-red when ripe (hence the color name of 'pomegranate red'). Its unusual interior is composed of sections of seeds covered in a juicy, transleuscent flesh, inbedded in the cream colored walls of the fruit. This structure often spilts open to reveal the ruby-colored seeds, which are the edible portion. These are usually eaten fresh, hand extracted from the surround membrane of the fruit wall. They are also often made into jams or jellies. The cooling, slightly tart juice is ingredient of the drink known as "granadine", with the addition of sugar and water. The plant is very easy to cultivate and is tolerant of a wide variety of conditions. It is quite tolerant of alkaline soils and drought, making it very useful in mediterranean climates.

Caper 50 Seeds The Caper has a long history of being cultivated; capers were noted as being a marketable commodity for the ancient Greeks by Dioscorides and their use was mentioned by the Roman scholar, Pliny the Elder. In this several millennia of use a simple rule for cultivation of caper bush has developed, that is to give plants a similarly harsh condition as it would grow in naturally. Caper bushes thrive when planted in lean well drained soil in a hot sunny location with it little or no water. Although appreciative of some summer irrigation in well drained soil, a sure way to kill a caper bush is to over water it. Tip growth can be damaged by temperatures in the mid 20's° F but plants are root hardy down to at least 18° F. A simple rule of thumb is that the caper bush can be planted where the olive tree grows. As an ornamental plant caper bushes can be an attractive loose groundcover, a specimen small shrub or can be used as an espalier, which presents the flower buds well for picking. The caper bush is salt-tolerant and will flourish along shores within sea-spray zones. As flowers are born on first-year branches, one can cut back plants back annually without sacrificing flowering and have a healthier and bushier plant. In colder regions the Caper should be grown in a pot and set outside in the summer and brought inside in the winter. The caper plant is well known for the culinary properties of the caper, the immature flower buds which have been pickled in vinegar or preserved in granular salt. They have long been used in recipes of salads, pasta, meat, sauces and garnishes to add a pungent spicy flavor and aroma to food.

Victorian Perfumed Melon 10 Seeds - Heirloom  Also known as Plum Granny, Plum Granny Plumgranite, Dudaim Melon, QUEEN ANNE'S POCKET Melon This pretty little vine is an heirloom treasure often forgotten in modern day gardens. A unique vine will sport 2-3" melons of yellow and orange in only 75-80 days. In days long ago, the melons were carried in the pockets of those who may not have had the facilities needed for proper hygeine. The melons would help to mask body odors when one was not able to bathe, thus the term 'pocket pomander' was born. They are also edible. Stories of old tell that Queen Anne herself carried one, which would explain why common names such as Her Majesty's Melon have been used.

Mushrooms
14-15" Shiitake Mushroom Log with Soaking Tray All-natural hardwood logs injected with shiitake spawn produce mushrooms every two months for years, using room light and room temperature. To produce mushrooms, or "fruit" the log, soak it in non-chlorinated ice water for 24 hours in its own tray. Harvest in 6-10 days. Logs require regular soaking in nonchlorinated room-temperature water every two weeks. Log-grown Shiitakes are high in protein, low in fat and have a meaty texture. They have a deep, rich flavor and absorb the flavors of spices, herbs and foods they're cooked with. Chefs prefer shiitakes grown on logs for their flavor, texture, and color. Certified Organic Wheatgrass Sprouting Seed - 5 lbs All Wheat is Not Equal We have had the experience of growing wheatgrass and being in the commercial wheatgrass business over the last 14 years. During that time we have experienced many different kinds of wheat. We have used wheat from Texas, Utah, Montana, California, and Israel both organic and non organic. There are two kinds of wheat one can buy: chemical free and certified organic. Most wheat is chemical free in that the farmer might or might not use an herbicide to control the weeds in his fields. If he uses chemicals on the wheat, it will cause a distinct taste in the bread thus no chemicals are used on the wheat itself. Then there is certified organic: Certified organic is the same as chemical free except the wheat is grown by farmers who have not used chemicals on their land for over ten years. The difference is the certification. If a wheat is organic and you grow it in organic soil, it will have the necessary organisms in the soil to help it assimilate the minerals properly. Organic produce should also have the organism on it which produces cobalamin (B-12) In our search to give you the very best wheat we have done two things. We now handle an chemical free red spring wheat, from Northern Idaho. For those who want certified organic, we have a red spring QAI Certified Organic. QAI is Quality Assurance International, who give independent, third party certification of organic food systems and have been the foundation of domestic and international organic food trade. Organic San Marzano Tomato 50 Seeds - Great for Sauce! That the San Marzano tomato is different from - and superior to - other plum tomatoes is easy to establish. You simply have to taste it. How it got that way is a much more complicated matter. According to Linneaus' classification, the tomato belongs to the Solanaceae (nightshade) family which includes potatoes, peppers and other less benign plants. Because it begins as a plant ovary it is botanically a fruit, though the United States Supreme Court decreed in 1893 that it is a vegetable, and lawyers ought to know. The San Marzano has two locules or seed pockets as opposed to 5 to 7 in round tomatoes. But how did that come to be? "It, (the plum shape) might have arisen as a mutation," said tomato genetist Charles Rick of the University of California. "The genetic difference between it and the round type is only one or two genes. It apparently wasn't in any of the original varieties that were brought into the Mediterranean," he added, "but the fact that it is pretty widely spread through the Mayan area sugests that it is a very old type of variant." In Italy farmers traditionally selected the best tomato fruits, then picked and dried their seeds. So a primitive sort of selection resulted in a series of hybrids. Savino remembers being told that at the beginning of the 19th century when farmers found a particularly beautiful or unusual plant they set aside the seeds. "Bit by bit the shapes changed until we got the present San Marzano shape."
