This page is basically a set of "in-context" links to purchase the contents of
bug-out bag and survival kit lists. It is not all-inclusive, nor is it
recommended that ALL items be purchased. Only YOU can decide what is necessary
for your survival. Everybody's situation is different. What we will try and
do here is examine scenarios and what items would come in handy (or be sorely
missed if not present).
When it comes to survival gear, there are categories of assembly and carry:
1) Things you should ALWAYS carry on or near you
2) Things you should ALWAYS carry in your vehicle
3) Things you should have assembled for ANY excursion
4) Things you should have assembled for any EXTENDED excursion
5) Things you should ALWAYS have assembled and at hand at home
6) Things you should have assembled and READY FOR TRANSPORT in case of
evacuation
7) Things you should have assembled and at hand for a MINOR/MAJOR EMERGENCY
at home.
8) Things you should have assembled and ready for a MAJOR DISASTER
9) Things/events/scenarios you should CONSIDER and PLAN FOR
10) Things you should DO/PRACTICE on a regular basis
Some initial things to consider:
Will you have to move, or can you (or must you) "shelter in place?"
~ If you shelter in place;
How long will it be necessary to do
so?
Will it be necessary to fend off
aggressive and/or panicky neighbors/intruders?
Are you willing to (or incapable of
refusing to) aid others?
Do you expect others (friends/family)
to arrive - and might you have to go get them?
If your shelter is contaminated or
overwhelmed, do you have a "Plan B" and how will you implement it?
~ If you are planning to move at the first indication of an impending emergency:
Is your destination already stocked
and prepared for your arrival?
What if you get there and "someone
Else" has taken possession of your place?
Will you have to pick up others
before you depart and do you all have a plan for this procedure?
If you are caught unexpectedly in an
"instant" situation do you have a plan for dealing with the chaos?
Will you have adequate food and water?
Complete, G.I.
MRE's are only good for about a week - they ARE NOT a sustainable diet. Take
it from someone who's tried it. An MRE diet MUST be supplemented with copious
amounts of potable water and, if nothing else, a fiber supplement and some form
of laxative. Depending on the meals you eat, you are going to need one or both
before the 4th or 5th day. On the plus side, most (Complete, G.I.) MRE's supply enough
concentrated energy and nutrients that you can do with a mere one or two meals a
day - three is definitely overkill. I humped mortar rounds, my medic bag and six
liters of IV fluids up and down the greasy, red-clay hills of the Panamanian
jungle, and never could find the desire (or need) to consume more than 2 MRE
meals a day. Then again, the
Complete Civilian version MRE's only supply about half the energy of a GI
meal. So plan appropriately. I haven't tried existing on those. With the
civilian MRE, you may not have to worry about "the plumbing." Though
your tax dollars pay for their production, the
GOVERNMENT is HOARDING the GI MRE's and they are no longer legally
available to non-governmental organizations. The bastards.
The serving size of freeze dried
foods DOES NOT supply enough energy for sustained activity - but will probably
be fine if you are cooped up in a shelter and waiting things out. If you are
planning on exerting yourself, you will need at least 2-3 times the amount of
energy supplied by a typical "serving" of freeze dried foods. This means your
"year supply" is only going to last, at most, 6 months - and probably only 4
months unless well supplemented. Below are some links for bug-out-bag FD meals. They
taste good, are somewhat filling, but remember they do NOT supply the energy
necessary for sustained activity and high-stress conditions. Supplement them
with the Emergency food rations at the bottom of the list. For more than bug-out

Water is life. You need to consider both the quantity and the quality of the
water you need to survive. Where is it coming from? How long will that supply
last? Can it be diverted away from you, either intentionally or unintentionally?
Do you have the knowledge and capacity to divert it back? In an emergency, can
you trust the quality of the water? Do you have the capacity to analyze and/or
treat the water in the absence of heat and power utilities? What about
storage capacity? Pumping or draining existing building and municipal storage?
Tapping into municipal delivery systems and/or wells? Do you know how or where
to look for these systems? How much water can you take with you if you have to
bug out? Where will you find water on your way to your destination? What about
the source for your destination - is it reliable?
Because we live in a technologically capable society, we tend to forget about
the MASSIVE infrastructure supporting our lifestyle. Water, it seems, is free
and easy to find everywhere and anywhere in the modern age. How will YOU react
when simply turning a faucet no longer produces that stream of liquid life? In
an emergency survival situation, water is more important than food.
You can survive on a quart of water per day, if you have to, but your condition
will begin to deteriorate over time. The commonly quoted requirements of 64
ounces per day (sedentary adults) is actually much more than MOST people I know
will ever intentionally consume. The majority of the fluid intake for people I
know comes from other beverages and foods. If EVERY ADULT drank a minimum of 64
ounces (1/2 gal.) of pure water a day in addition to
the fluids taken in with foods and other beverages, the world would be a much
healthier place. But that is another story for another page.
Here is a test to see if you are currently getting enough fluids: Take a pinch
(don't hurt yourself) of the loose skin on the top of your wrist, just in front
of the joint. Pinch it up and let go. If the skin snaps back nice and taut, you
have adequate hydration. If it returns slowly, or if the skin retains a ridge,
then you are not drinking enough water.
So, for planning purposes, you should try to make sure you have access to a
MINIMUM half-gallon of water per person per day. This does not take into account
hygienic necessities, so plan on storing breath mints and STRONG deodorant, as
well. In extreme situations, provided you have access to sufficient supplies of
water, you might consider equal replacement measures - monitoring the amount of
fluids expelled and rationing to replace losses, plus a bit more for good
health. Just breathing normally expels 500-750ml (16-24 fluid
oz) of water daily. Survival members should be instructed to try to
breath through their nose, rather than their mouth, in order to minimize fluid
loss.

Canning Water
Boil the water for approximately 10 minutes. Let the water cool to 125 to 150 degrees F. Decant (pour off without disturbing the sediment) into another pan. Fill the jars to within 1/4 inch head space. Adjust the lids (lids should be prepared according to manufacturer's directions). Process in a boiling water bath for 10 minutes for quarts or pints.
The water is boiled to precipitate the temporary hardness (calcium) out that would otherwise settle to the bottom, and to get rid of dissolved oxygen and many off-odors.
Shake the jars well before drinking to enhance the flavor. Minerals settle to the bottom of the jar. Shaking helps to re-distribute the minerals and puts some of the air back into the water so that it does not taste flat.
