About First Aid/Medical Kits & Your Requirements:

Simply put, your requirements are a fully stocked and staffed hospital. At the very minimum, a high-speed trauma clinic. Of course, that's not possible. The supplies you stock up on and the knowledge and level of ability you have will probably be all you can expect in a survival situation. This should be something of a wake-up call for you.

What good is it to have a tracheal kit if you don't know how to use it? Why stock up on IV fluids and infusion sets if you can't find a vein (or don't know what a vein is, actually) or if you faint at the sight of blood? Why bother with so much as a band-aid if you haven't a clue about wound cleansing and infection?

We are survivors, so I am going to assume that you have at least the rudimentary basics regarding first aid. If you do not, then you better start spending a whole lot of time in our "Emergencies" section studying up on basic first aid techniques. Then and only then should you return here to start compiling a first aid list and buying products.

WITH KNOWLEDGE, you can find a way to make do. WITHOUT knowledge, all the supplies in the world aren't going to help you.

Oddly, this part is NOT covered in the Emergencies section. In fact, I don't believe I've seen it covered anywhere. So here goes -

To begin with, you need to grow up. Fainting and flailing about at the first sign of blood or trauma may be cute when there are doctors and medics about, but annoying as hell in a survival situation. All you are doing, if you can't control yourself, is making a bad situation worse by increasing the stress level of both the victim and any competent responder, distracting resources from the victim who REALLY needs help and possibly depleting resources to the point where YOU may be the cause of someone else's' death.

Fainting and panicky reactions are nothing more than selfish, EGOTISTIC responses to a situation that requires calm, focus, and immediate action. You need to forget about yourself for just a minute and concentrate on what MUST BE DONE. Don't worry about how it makes you feel. You can pass out or scream and shout after you take care of business. If you begin to feel faint or nauseous and panicky - USE THAT, recognize it, acknowledge it and let it make you mad (that you are such a wuss). Take a deep breath, push those feelings aside and DO WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE. Just remember to keep breathing, concentrate on what needs to be done, and DO IT! Do not focus on the blood - focus on the wound. Ignore the screaming (or deafening silence) and focus on the fact that you now have the life of a human being in your hands. Be absolutely determined not to let that life go. Not without a fight, not without doing everything you possibly can to keep that person breathing and their heart beating.

If your inability to function in a crisis results in a death that YOU might have prevented, you will never be able to forget it. Neither will anyone else. This doesn't mean that you HAVE TO save everyone. Sometimes people can't be saved. But you HAVE TO try. If you do your best and they still slip away, then that's the way it has to be. It's okay to feel bad about it - but no one will hold it against you as long a you tried your best.
