Care to comment on "Getting Out The Vote?" Let Us Know!
I don't trust elections, political polls, or those who run the polling places
and count the votes. I don't trust most voters, for that matter. Nor do I trust
the electronic voting machines - especially the ones that won't give a receipt,
even though I don't believe a receipt means squat. STILL, there isn't any other
option and, whether a vote actually counts (regarding an election), a vote which
is cast MUST be indicative of how far the politicians and bureaucrats suspect
they can stray without suffering the wrath of their constituency. The more
people who vote, they must believe, the more people are paying attention to what
they are doing. This, and this alone, is my primary motivation for voting -
whether the vote is actually applied to the matter at hand is beside the point.
Voting serves to put the politicians on notice that SOMEONE is watching. Even a
silly vote or a "null" vote serves this purpose, which is why I believe EVERYONE
legally capable of voting SHOULD vote.
The links on this page will reflect all political spectrums and strategies. I
consider myself to be a "right-wing conservative libertarian," but I may be the
only one. I don't know - I've never met anyone else who thinks quite the
way I do.
The oddest thing I've found regarding this subject is the difficulty of finding
relevant articles. Maybe I'm just not enough of an expert at manipulating search
engines. Help.
Getting Out the Vote in Local Elections
~ Results from Six Door-to-Door Canvassing Experiments: Prior to the
November 6, 2001 elections, randomized voter mobilization experiments were
conducted in Bridgeport, Columbus, Detroit, Minneapolis, Raleigh, and St.
Paul. Names appearing on official lists of registered voters were randomly
assigned to treatment and control groups. A few days before Election Day,
the treatment group received a face-to-face contact from a coalition of
nonpartisan student and community organizations, encouraging them to vote.
After the election, voter turnout records were used to compare turnout rates
among people assigned to treatment and control groups. Consistent with the
recent experimental results reported by Gerber and Green (2000b), the
findings here indicate that face-to-face voter mobilization was effective in
stimulating voter turnout across a wide spectrum of local elections.
