Care to comment on "US Bureaucracies?"  Let Us Know!

"Bureaucracies are designed to perform public business. But as soon as a bureaucracy is established, it develops an autonomous spiritual life and comes to regard the public as its enemy." Brooks Atkinson

"The only thing which saves us from the bureaucracy is its inefficiency."  Eugene McCarthy

"How come there's only one Monopolies Commission?"  Nigel Rees

I recently read or heard somewhere that the average salary of government workers now exceeds that of non-government workers. If/When I can find a link to substantiate this bit of gossip, I'll place it at the top of the page. But it's not difficult to believe even without the proof, is it?

I suspect there is something profound in this relationship of government pay vs. civilian pay. I suspect that it is indicative of the decline and impending demise of a nation.

I further suspect, though as yet have no credible proof, that if we were to sum the totals of all government employees and government supported non-workers, the number would come close to (if not exceed) the number of Citizens who do not depend upon Uncle for their daily bread.

Assistant Homeland Security Secretary Robert Stephan claimed government bureaucrats are “more clever than al Qaeda in many respects” and are the “No. 1 killer in the United States” because they “focus more on themselves than they do the collective good." It’s the “career bureaucrats that know they are going to outlast any political leadership that is put above them” who are the problem, said Stephan, who noted that he’s had them in his own organization. They’re going to try to outlast you, and either try to do the minimal, try to get by or they’re so focused on just protecting their own turf,” he said. Those people, according to Stephan, “haven’t learned the hard lessons of Sept. 11 and Hurricane Katrina.”

America's Bureaucracy - In the United States of America, there are four different kinds of bureaucracies: departments, independent agencies, independent regulatory commissions and government corporations. While departments were originally intended to be the largest and most important of government bureaucracies, many independent agencies are larger, in terms of both staffs and budgets, than many departments

Growing Power of U.S. Bureaucracies (warning - bad grammar) The United States have developed a gigantic system of Federal, State and Local Bureaucracies. This bureaucratic structure consists of millions “pen pushers” that fall into three major categories: elected officials, appointed administrators, and so-called “career bureaucrats“.

THE CHURCH OF BUREAUCRACY by Clay Barham - I suppose everyone has heard you can put a live frog into a pot of cool water, turn on the heat, watch the water boil and the frog cook, without his first jumping out. Americans are frogs when it comes to the growth of government and of its bureaucracy. Seventy-five years ago, the Federal Budget, supporting a whole range of interventions into our daily lives, was a mere four billion dollars. Now, it is in the trillions of dollars and the bureaucracy has swollen to a position where it is our most prominent church. A large number of Americans either worship bureaucracy or serve in its choir. It is the biggest single burden placed upon the liberties of Americans, and is involved in every facet of behavior. It is the American Cancer.

Government Of, By, and For the Bureaucracy: by Will Offensicht (July 18, 2008) - We've pointed out that the Civil Service Act of 1883 made it effectively impossible to fire any government employee, no matter how incompetent, unless they're actually convicted of a crime, mere moral turpitude is insufficient. Once past the probation period, the only way a manager can get rid of a subordinate is to shove him or her off to another department.

Why bureaucracy will likely destroy America, by John Silveira - If they were presented with evidence that what they were doing was harmful or wrong, do you think they’d say, ‘Well, let’s close up shop and go down to the employment office and file claims.’ Of course not. They have mouths to feed, mortgages to pay, credit card bills that come due. They have their jobs and they want to keep them. If you promise a week’s pay, an annual vacation, and a retirement and health plan, you can get very ordinary people to justify their jobs even when their jobs are inherently harmful; even when the job kills, maims, and ruins lives. The Soviet gulags were run by bureaucrats; the Nazi death camps were run by bureaucrats; and in this country, we’ve taken what is at very worst a critical health problem—drug abuse—and criminalized it. And to handle that, we have a bureaucratic system that runs our prisons very effectively...
