Air Guns

Air Pistol Hunting Forum Doesn't seem to get too much action, but there are a number of posts.

Air Rifle Hunting / Pest Control - Rats, Rabbits, Grey Squirrels ... An article from the UK. See their front page at Air Rifle Pest Control, Airguns, Free Targets, Rifle reviews ...

AIRGUN HUNTING for SQUIRRELS What animal is arguably the most popular critter pursued by airgun hunters? If you guessed the squirrel, you are probably correct. Whether tree squirrels in the East, or ground squirrels in the West, it would be hard to find another animal better suited to airgun hunting than the squirrel.

Airguns are for hunting: here is one way the hunter can stay in shape during the off season, while reliving some boyhood memories.

What makes a good hunting airgun This is a common question I hear a lot and the answer applies to most small game including squirrel. Any gun that will produce at least about 12fpe (foot pounds of energy) will reliably kill most small game out to about 35 yards. Larger calibers make bigger holes and the pellets are heavier so they deliver more energy at a given speed and distance than smaller calibers. The heavier pellets also retain energy longer allowing shots to be effective at slightly longer ranges.

The Hunting Life - Ducks, Airgun Hunting One of the specific problems which the landowner wanted sorting was the huge flocks of Canada geese which were leaving a mess all over his fields. What made this problem worse was the fact that a rather posh housing estate had been built over looking one of his fields and that negated the use of a shotgun or rifle. This left me with very little option but to use air rifles.  Actually more about training his gundog, but hey...

California Small Game and Varmint Pellet Rifle Hunting. Game, Gear ... [PDF] Pellet rifle hunting is a scaled down version of varmint and small game hunting, normally done with a .22 Rimfire (.22RF) firearm. Pellet rifles are used instead of .22RF firearms for safety and perhaps surprisingly, for effectiveness. Often, you can find land for air rifle hunting, plinking and target shooting a lot closer than if you wanted to use a firearm. That a pellet rifle offers greater safety is no surprise, but greater effectiveness than a firearm? Well, listen...

Airguns For Wild Boar? Yes, believe it or not, large bore (usually precharged) airguns up to .50 caliber exist and can be used to hunt fairly decently sized game.

NOT AN ENDORSEMENT: Career Dragon Slayer Air Rifle at Cobra Airguns.com,

Quackenbush Airguns: The .50-caliber Bandit! (Part 1) Dennis Quackenbush completed his first big bore air rifle in 1996. The Brigand, the first of his Outlaw series, was an astonishing gun when it was introduced, because there simply wasn't anything else that could be bought affordably. The Bandit is a .50-caliber rifle that shoots a 0.495 round lead ball weighing 182 grains. To optimize the new rifle for hunters, Dennis decided to look into the question of rifling twist rates and number of lands by actually testing different designs. Part 2 - Part 3

Large bore Airgun hunting Here’s a little twist, instead of airguns where typically the caliber is no greater than .22, how about 70+ grain of a .375 cal lead ball propelled by air! Crossman in the ’60 and ’70 had some airguns that were replicas of real firearms and at one time made an airgun capable of such feat. Originally intended to be a training aid for shotgun shooting the Model 1100 was patterned after the Remington 1100 auto-loading shotgun.

SIXGUNS FOR GAME By Robert Smythe. Heart Bar Ranch. Saguache, Colorado: In all probability, the .45 Long Colt has had more use, especially in the West, than other sixgun cartridge. No other sixgun has the romantic history and associations as has the .45 Colt. It is the gun that "WON THE WEST", the first successful center-fire revolver cartridge and the arm about which countless stories have been told and written. This cartridge with heavy loads, develops real power and yet is more pleasant to shoot than the .44 magnum, which like other magnums, uses very high velocity to develop power.

Pistol Hunting For Whitetails Tom Henderson has been hunting deer with his .357 magnum for the last 9 years. He tagged 5 deer in those 9 years. Two of those deer were from state land in heavily populated southern Michigan. That is significantly better than the 30% batting rate of the typical Michigan firearms hunter.

Handgun Hunting This article is about the handguns and handgun cartridges most suitable for hunting. I am limiting the discussion to conventional handguns and cartridges. Bolt action or other exotic single shot pistols with barrels in excess of 10" in length will not be covered. Such weapons really amount to carbines without a butt stock. Nor will it deal with rifle cartridges like the .22 Hornet, .30-30 Winchester and .45-70 Govt. that are sometimes adapted to these exotic handguns. See also: How to Bench Rest a Hunting Pistol by the same author.

Handgun harvesting: hunting with a handgun requires patience ... It was one of those afternoons that only occur in the late fall days of Indian summer and especially only in the mountains of Southern Idaho. Crisp, cool mornings with a touch of frost, the welcoming of the sun as it rises to remove the chill in the air, and the arrival of a day that allows one to hunt in comfort wearing nothing more than regular clothes, longsleeve shirt, jeans, Stetson, and loggers, all topped off with a down vest. I'm sure that such beautiful days are found in other parts of the country, but I will never believe that anywhere could be better than this.

The Fun And Challenge Of Handgun Hunting The wooded bottoms along Dirty Creek in Muskogee County, Oklahoma, are full of squirrels. Bill Scherman of Muskogee has been hunting squirrels in these bottoms for years. But today, there's a new twist to his hunt. Instead of hunting with a rifle or shotgun, Scherman hunts with a .22 handgun.

Not created equal - Handgun hunting: tips, techniques and ... Realistically many of the "house-guns" are totally unsuited for any kind of hunting--or even of little value in recreational shooting. If the individual does not have any other gun or hunting experience, I would normally suggest purchasing a relatively inexpensive shotgun; learn to use it safely and effectively and start their hunting experience with small game.

Hunting with Handguns Game Laws vary from state to state but the variation in rules governing handgun hunting can create a ballistic challenge. Iowa recently joined those states permitting handgun hunting. For instance, Iowa only permits straight cased cartridges in calibers of .375 or larger.

Rifle

All-Around Hunting Rifle A perennial debate smolders around the best all-round hunting cartridge, which, most of us agree, doesn't exist. But some come close. And if you're going to be back in the wilderness--possibly on the hunt of a lifetime--there are good reasons to hunt exclusively with one rifle and one bullet: intimacy. The one-gun hunter knows his rifle's balance, trigger pull and trajectory. Through long association he can wield it quickly and accurately. There is no fumbling for the safety, no questioning the holdover.

The Big Game And Elk Hunting Rifle With so many rifles and calibers available to us today the choice is not an easy one. The truth is, there is no perfect one. But there are some guidelines that may help you with the choice.

Hunting Rifle Accuracy I believe it was Townsend Whelen who wrote that, "Only accurate rifles are interesting." As a general proposition I would tend to agree with him. Few things are more frustrating than a firearm that cannot be made to consistently hit the target.

Building a Hunting Rifle Battery I have already written articles covering "Good First Rifles," "The One Rifle Big Game Hunter," and "Matching the Gun to the Game" so this one is going to be about building a coherent rifle battery. I am assuming that the reader has learned to shoot, owns a .22 rimfire rifle and has done at least some big game hunting with his or her first deer rifle. Now it's time to consider building a versatile, but not overly extensive, battery of centerfire hunting rifles.

Pheasant Country: South Dakota Pheasant Hunting Shotgun shells. Just grab some and throw them in the duffle bag right? Wrong. When it comes to pheasant hunting, all shotgun shells are not created equal. The subtle differences that show up only as numbers printed on the box can mean the difference between bulging game bag and long walks in the grass in pursuit of wounded roosters.

Hunting-Shotgun Patterning Patterning a shotgun is a process where you choose a specific load and choke combination and test how the gun shoots at certain distances. Before patterning your shotgun, it's a good idea to familiarize yourself with the following terms...

Shotgun Report Looks like kind of a weird FAQ or Tip Series, but there's some interesting sstuff here.

SHOTGUN SHOOTING Did you know there was a merit badge for shotgunning? I didn't, but here are the requirements for Scouts.

Hunting-Shotgun Chokes In shotguns, the choke is a constriction of the interior of the barrel near the muzzle. This constriction is much like a funnel. It compresses the shape of the shot charge to produce larger or smaller patterns at varying distances. The amount of constriction determines the size of the pattern, with tighter chokes producing smaller patterns. A discussion of chokes involves words like "open," "looser," "tighter" and "closed." An open or loose choke has less constriction than a tight choke.

Fall Shotgun Turkey Strategies -- NH Fish and Game Fall shotgun turkey hunting, available in select WMUs in New New Hampshire (season details and locations), calls for different strategies than those used during the spring gobbler season.

Shotgun Slugs The first shotgun "slugs" were probably round, lead "pumpkin balls." These were common projectiles for muskets and shotguns--any sort of smooth bore long arm--for a long time. Unfortunately, the accuracy of a lead ball fired from a smooth bore barrel is pretty sad. Hitting the target is problematical and precise bullet placement is nearly impossible except at very close range. Also, a lead ball has a very poor sectional density (SD), and consequently poor penetration. There had to be a better way...

Introducing a Youngster to Shotgunning Few experiences in the waterfowling are as rewarding as introducing a newcomer to the sport. But long before you load your son, daughter or wife into the duck boat for that first adventure in the blind, it’s important they receive a proper introduction to the gun.

The Instinctive Shotgun Method - Discover The Outdoors Have you never been the shotgun shooter that you always thought you could be? Are you constantly chipping and cracking clay targets instead of crushing them? Worse yet, do you often cripple game in the hunting field instead of making a clean kill? If so, you may never have learned to shoot a shotgun properly. And you may be fighting against your body’s own natural, instinctive abilities to hit a flying target.

Black Powder

Muzzleloader Hunting: A Beginner's Guide Each year more hunters are discovering the thrill of muzzleloader hunting. There are several advantages to a muzzleloader hunt over traditional rifle hunting. In the Western states in particular, there are special muzzleloader seasons that traditionally coincide with the peak of the elk rut. Licenses are limited, so there are few hunters in the woods. Depending on the location and the skill of the caller, bulls can be bugled in to close ranges. All in all, it makes for a very exciting hunt.

Practical Hunting Trajectories B. E. Spencer. Because of the relatively low velocities and poor flight characteristics of the projectiles used in black powder rifles, the problem is compounded for them. Ballistics coefficients (BC) for all black powder projectiles are low, which is simply a way of saying they are poor at forcing their way through the air toward the target. High drag causes them to slow quickly, and this results in an exaggerated looping path to the target. This is true of conicals, but especially of roundball.

Hunting with a Muzzleloading Shotgun To many hunters, muzzleloading means heavy-caliber rifles and more opportunities to tag deer. Deer hunting isn't the only thing you can do with a muzzleloader, however. A muzzleloading shotgun can give your autumn outings for any game a delicious twist.

Hunting Tips - Hunting Tips from Shotgun World Just for dove & ducks, right now, but looks like room to expand for others.

Muzzleloader Hunting This page concerns my most recent addiction, muzzle loading rifles of the modern persuasion. I'm currently involved in a whole lot of testing to resolve some questions I have regarding these modern muzzleloading marvels. Since I couldn't really find the quantitative data that I was looking for, I've begun trying to collect it myself. I've reloaded centerfire ammunition for years, so I'm using a lot of the same methods that I've learned in that venue to address muzzleloading.

Muzzle Loader Advice - Page 2 - KY Hunting Forums

Are Sabots THAT Much Better than other Muzzleloading Projectiles? (Article by Randy Wakeman) This question comes up more often than I would have imagined. Before moving along, we have to accept that there is no such thing as a 250 grain muzzleloading projectile pushed by 100 grains of black powder that cannot kill a deer. At least to the best of my knowledge there is not...

The Best Muzzleloading Bullet for Deer Hunting (Article by Randy Wakeman) The search for the "best" deer hunting muzzleloading bullet continues and, as evidenced by the many bullet debates that twaddle on with a cacophony of shrill discord, consensus will likely never be reached. We all too often fall into the trap of giving far too much credence to our own personal experiences.

Muzzleloading's Point of Impact Myth Often, you'll hear folks fret and stammer about a "point of impact shift" in muzzleloading, attributed to everything from recoil pads to a change in the rotation of the earth. Velocity does affect point of impact, but with most muzzleloading big game animals still taken in relatively intimate conditions (50 yards or so), the point of impact due to muzzle velocity changes is not as dramatic as you might think. If we miss our deer, we are better off finding something else to blame it on.

Big Game with Muzzleloaders Going after big game with a muzzleloading firearm is practical and rewarding as long as the hunter remains aware of certain responsibilities to the game. As with a smokeless powder firearm, it is the hunter's responsibility to choose a projectile and firearm that can generate enough power to cleanly and humanely kill the animal if the bullet is placed in the proper location.

Effective Muzzleloader Range Much ado and ballyhoo has been foisted, perpetrated, and disseminated about the effective hunting range of today's modern inline muzzleloader. The inline industry's ad copy has done its fair share of taking extreme liberties with the truth, inventing the myth of "magnum muzzleloaders,"--an odd concept of power--and proclaiming a muzzleloader to be the equivalent of a 7mm Remington Magnum centerfire rifle, an absolutely ridiculous notion with no basis in the field.

Coyote Hunting...With Knight and Hale Legendary call-makers, video and television personalities Harold Knight and David Hale have been successfully calling coyotes for decades. Here are their secrets for success.

Nighthunting for Varmints by John St. Clair. Hunting predators at night is one of the most exciting and challenging types of hunting. Seeing a set of glowing eyes approaching out of the dark and not knowing for sure what they belong to is, to put it mildly, a bit unnerving and exciting at the same time.

The gray squirrel is as elusive as any woodland creature, including deer. Coming home with squirrels in the bucket requires talent in stalking, patience, and, most importantly, knowledge of the squirrels themselves. Deer hunters will find squirrel hunting excellent practice for their bigger game. If you can sneak up on a squirrel, you're on your way to sneaking up on deer.

What calls do I need to call predators?- Our experts have found that you can call coyotes and other predators with practically any type of predator call, but like most animals, predators do respond to some sounds more often than others. We would recommend some type of rabbit in distress, such as a cottontail or jackrabbit. They are very effective on all predators.

Fox And Coyote Calling Tips These are great tips to use with regards to varmint hunting for coyotes and foxes.

High Desert Critters For many years my partner Bob and I have been hunting coyotes out here in the Mojave Desert of Southern California. Not until January of 1996 did we figure out how to do it better. Not necessarily the right way; however our success rate improved, which equaled more furs on the stretcher. The following is what we did to bag up more high-desert critters.

Predator Calling For Rabbit Eaters One of the most exciting and challenging methods of hunting these cagey varmints is by becoming the hunted instead of the hunter, and getting these varmints to come to you, instead of the other way around. This type of hunting is called predator calling and is accomplished by using a varmint or predator call.

Changing Tactics for Snow Geese With snow goose populations reaching record proportions, more waterfowlers are now hunting these birds than ever before. Learning some tricks may help you in your efforts to put some of these tasty geese in your freezer next season. See also: Changing Tactics for Snow Geese II

When Mallards Come No ducks were flying and I really did not want to waste a vacation day in a quiet blind. However, the plans were made and the trip was on. As it turned out, my friends and I experienced one of those rare migration days that duck hunters dream about.

Open-Water Goose Hunting Hundreds of thousands of Canada geese are harvested each season in grain fields. These birds, however, spend lots of time on open water, resting. Hunting geese on the water takes some special planning and techniques. Let's take a look at open-water goose hunting.

Vermont Snows The Champlain Valley of Vermont is well known to skiers all over the world. The snows I'm talking about are the snow geese. Many waterfowlers in the east are not even aware that they have this tremendous hunting right in their own backyard. Most easterners can climb into their truck, load up the dog and be in the area in just a few hours.

Texas Redheads The quality of duck hunting along the coast of southern Texas is no secret. There are over three million ducks that winter in the Lone Star State annually.

Waterfowls Waterfowling today offers the sportsman diversity within its confines. The many species combined with their varied habitat offer the waterfowl hunter many different permutations no matter how many seasons he hunts.

Heartland Ducks Blinds are the standard concealment method around the potholes found on Pike County, IL river bottom lands. They are a very comfortable place to spend a day of gunning.

Mississippi River Ducks A common sight on the Upper Mississippi River: a hunter in a makeshift blind with his dog watching for action over a small island pothole. Ducks use this habitat extensively during the annual migration which usually occurs in early November

Waterfowl Guns Pass-shooting requires a gun with a tight choke and chambered for magnum shells. A three-inch magnum 12 gauge is the minimum amount of gun for the serious pass-shooter.

15 tips to Deer Hunting Want to improve your odds in the whitetail woods? Give these tag-filling tips a try. By J Wayne Fears: To a whitetail hunter, "success" can be defined in many ways, but if your definition involves taking your share of large-racked bucks, you need more than luck to achieve it...

Best Cartridges for Whitetail Deer One Man's Opinion by Wayne Hartt. I have witnessed deer (whitetails) killed with a number of different cartridges through the years, from a .22 caliber up to a .35 caliber, and as a result, I have formed my own opinions about rifle cartridges and deer.

Whitetail, Finesse 'em or Force 'em 10/04/02 When hunting whitetail afield a common strategy is to use noise to attract in a buck. Most hunters agree that anything from rattling antlers to grunting calls will work. However there is a considerable amount of debate on what intensity should be used when creating these sounds.

Hogs

Wild Pig Management Homepage Pigs(Sus scrofa)are native to Eurasia and northern Africa. In the early 1700's Spanish and Russian settlers introduced domestic pigs to California as livestock and many became feral. In the 1920's a Monterey county landowner introduced the European wild boar, a wild subspecies of Sus scrofainto California, which bred with the domestic pigs. The result of these introductions is a wild boar/feral domestic pig hybrid.

WILD BOAR ANATOMY, HUNTING KILL ZONE OF THE FERAL PIG The heart, lung, and spinal cord anatomy of the feral hog is widely misunderstood. This article deals with the anatomy of the wild boar. GRAPHIC PHOTOS are used to illustrate the location of the heart, lungs, and spinal cord so hunters can better understand the proper KILL ZONE area.

Bears

Fall Black Bear Basics 08/01/02 Many big game hunters have hunted the cervids (deer and elk). However fewer have gone after another big game species that inhabits the same areas: black bear. Black bear hunting takes a different set of skills than elk or deer hunting and with many states banning the use of bait/hounds, the challenge of black bear has only grown.

Black Bear Hunters: Be Selective If overharvest becomes a problem black bear seasons and bag limits may be restricted in the future. But if hunters are selective it should not be necessary to do so. Hunting over bait allows hunters to be very selective. Baiting can provide you with opportunities to select for bear size or absence of cubs. See also Hunting Black Bear Over Bait

Hunting Black & Brown/Grizzly Bears Black bears and grizzly bears may live in the same area but differ in behavior, habitat preference, and diet. Black bears prefer the mixed habitats of lowlands, like those of the Tanana Flats. They thrive on berries, carrion, vegetation and other wildlife. Grizzly bears generally live in high country above timberline where they dig for roots and ground squirrels, eat berries, and actively hunt caribou and other wildlife.

Skinning Your Bear Knowing the proper skinning techniques for bear can make a great difference in the final product of your bear skin rug or mount. The following guidelines are the most accepted bear skinning methods used by taxidermists.

Moose Hunting: Preparation and Procedures 05/19/02 The near-sonic boom of the fire-breathing .454 Casul blasted the entire forest as the bull spun away from the hunter in the tree stand. In an instant, the huge bull was gone, as if it never existed. Thick scrub made stalking impossible, each step produced an amplified crack, notifying every living creature within ear shoot to scram. To be successful, moose hunters must become invisible and have vision of an eagle.
