Principles
of Aquaculture by Robert R. Stickney (Paperback
- February 1994) A
text that presents the underlying principles of aquaculture and provides
examples that underscore the principles and demonstrate the variability
that exists among species of culture organisms. It extends the scope of
Stickney's Principles of Warmwater Aquaculture (Wiley, 1979) to
encompass a wider variety of aquatic animals, including such coldwater
fishes as trout and salmon. The emphasis is on species being reared around
the world by commercial aquaculturists.
Nutrient
Requirements of Fish (Nutrient Requirements of Domestic Animals) by
Board On Agri National Research Council (Paperback - February 1994) Using
the latest research in fish nutrition, this volume revises and combines
the 1981 edition on coldwater fish and the 1983 edition on warmwater fish
and shellfish. In addition to updating requirements for energy, protein,
minerals, and vitamins, this book provides, for the first time, summary
tables on nutrient requirements of a variety of fish species, including
channel catfish, rainbow trout, Pacific salmon, carp, and tilapia. Tabular
data on amino acid requirements of 11 species are also included.
Nutrition
and Fish Health by Chhorn Lim (Editor),
et al (Hardcover - September 2001) Diseases are a major threat to the
sustainability of the aquaculture industry, but using antibiotics to treat
diseases presents some drawbacks. In this text, 25 specialists from the
U.S. and Canada contribute 17 chapters on nutrition as an alternative
means of improving fish health and defending against infection. Coverage
includes an overview of the diseases of warmwater fish, economically
important diseases of salmonids, shrimp viral diseases, marine fish and
larval fish nutrition, feeding management, vitamin and mineral
requirements, fish immune system mechanisms, immunostimulants, aflatoxins,
nutrition and environmental stress, and the use of vaccines.
Integrated
Fish Farming by Workshop on Integrated
Fish Farming (Editor), et al (Hardcover) Integrated Fish Farming (IFF)
is a sustainable-agriculture technology practiced widely in Asia and other
regions of the world. This integrated technology can offer farmers
economic improvements while lessening the adverse environmental impacts of
farming. IFF systems typically involve a combination of fish polyculture,
integration of agricultural production (livestock and/or crops) with
aquaculture, and on-farm waste recycling. Drawing on research presented by
experts from around the world at the International Workshop on Integrated
Fish Farming, this book provides thorough, detailed and truly
interdisciplinary coverage of one of the world's most important approaches
to integrated farming systems.

the science of aquaculture has been around for centuries, it has only
recently attained popularity. This textbook introduces a wide spectrum of
aquaculture-related subjects. Topics covered include the history of
aquaculture, water quality and sources, culture systems, economics, law,
engineering, chemistry, biology and more.
Fish
Disease: Diagnosis and Treatment by
Edward J. Noga (Hardcover) Explains how to manage common fish
diseases, mainly in cultured fish, with some information applying to wild
populations. Unique features of this nontraditional text are a
systems-based rather than a taxonomic approach used to describe fish
diseases, and detailed descriptions of pathogens. Part I details methods
of diagnosis, and Part II covers problems as they are encountered in the
clinical workup. Part III details how fish are treated. Includes color and
b&w photos at macro and micro levels. Noga is professor of aquatic
medicine at North Carolina State University's College of Veterinary
Medicine.
Feed
Management in Intensive Aquaculture by
Stephen Goddard (Hardcover - December 1995) This book is a guide to the
management and use of formulated feeds in semi-intensive and intensive
fish and shrimp culture. Feeds represent the major variable operating
costs in intensive aquaculture, and optimizing their use represents an
opportunity for many farmers to increase or maintain the profitability of
their enterprise. Fish farmers have an ever widening range of feed types
and feeding methods from which to choose, and must carefully monitor the
use of feeds in order to control costs. This book includes details of
those biological, environmental, and nutritional factors which influence
the feeding, growth and survival of fish and shrimp, and of which some
understanding is essential in the establishment of effective feeding
practices. Details are given of feed handling and storage methods, and the
various methods available for feeding fish are described and their
relative methods appraised. Methods for selection of the appropriate feed
types, ration sizes, and feeding schedules are included, and details given
of how to measure performance of feeding programs.
Marine
Fish Culture by John W. Tucker (Hardcover
- December 1998) With
the depletion of wild fish stocks by factors such as over fishing,
habitat degradation, pollution, and red tides, the pressures and
incentives for commercial farming of marine food and aquarium fish have
increased dramatically. Concurrent with that trend has been an increase in
the experimental use of live marine fish in various basic and applied
sciences, for example, in developmental, ecological, and toxicological
research. MFC is the first comprehensive reference and textbook on this
subject and provides information on more than 870 species in 129 families.
The book is the product of the author's 27 years of research and teaching
in fish culture and biology. Approximately 12,000 references through June
1998 were screened in writing this work, and more than 4,000 are included
in the text. MFC covers all the major topics necessary
for raising marine fish, including overviews of commercial production
statistics, water sources, water treatment, rearing units, energetics,
health, and handling; detailed reviews of fish characteristics relative to
rearing, the rearing environment, reproduction, nutrition of larvae, and
nutrition of juveniles and adults; and reviews of current rearing
knowledge for food, bait, and ornamental marine fish, by family.

Carp:
Biology and Culture (Springer-Praxis Series in Aquaculture &
Fisheries) by R. Billard (Editor),
Lindsay Laird (Translator) (Hardcover - May 1999) For the first time, a book is available in English that
concentrates solely on the carp as an economic rather than an ornamental
fish with a panel of international experts producing a comprehensive,
practical volume about carp production and management. Starting with a
brief look at the biology of cyprinids, the book then discusses the
methods and management of carp farming, from water quality to the
economics of fish production in ponds. Novel methods to improve stock,
including genetic engineering, are covered and case studies give added
value to the text. As carp farming turns from traditional to intensive
methods, farmers, researchers and technicians in industry will welcome
this benchmark volume, which also is a valuable reference book for
graduate and postgraduate students and lecturers in aquaculture.
Fish
Farm: A Simulation of Commercial Aquaculture by
Robert Kosinski (Paperback - July 1999)
Small
Scale Crayfish Farming by Don R. Wilson
(Paperback - March 1992) This
useful book--a bare bones, how to manual--explores how to raise crayfish
in a small country setting. It is a surprisingly complete (for its size)
factual compilation of years of University and industry research as well
as individual findings on the culture of freshwater crayfish. It is well
known that farmed crayfish will grow to a much larger size than the wild
ones, and much more rapidly, if given optimum conditions. These conditions
are easily reached, and are much less strict than most aquaculture
species. Prepared in a number of tasty ways, freshwater crayfish are
highly regarded as a delicacy both here and abroad. They are similar to
lobster and shrimp in taste and texture, and are an excellent source of
high quality, low-fat protein. Targeting the small farmer or backyard
hobbyist, this book outlines specific guidelines for pond construction and
efficiency, food and environmental needs, tank culture, egg & juvenile
production for stocking, processing! & sale...of the best species of
freshwater crayfish for aquaculture in all areas of the US

Complete
Plans for Building Horse Barns Big and Small by Nancy W.
Ambrosiano, Mary F. Harcourt (Contributor) (Hardcover - May 1997) This book gives an
excellent overview of what it takes to build a barn, from choosing the
type, to preparing the ground, to hiring sub-contractors. Although the
plans can hardly be said to be "complete," they do give a good
idea of how different barn styles go together. You'll still need someone
knowledgeable in building to help you in the actual construction. The
plans include several innovative barn types and shapes. I particularly
liked the circular barn with a jumping/training track on the perimeter,
the stalls inside that and the "aisle" in the center.

Storey's
Guide to Raising Chickens by Gail Damerow Finally, a complete reference that covers all the
major areas of raising chickens. As a poultry farm and hatchery owner, I
always suggest this book first to anyone interested in raising chickens.
This is an indepth yet easy to read guide that is sure to educate even the
most experienced chicken fancier. This book will help you choose the right
breed of chicken, how to care for them, maintain their health, and meet
your individual goals for your flock. This is currently the premier guide
to raising chickens available.
Barnyard
in Your Backyard by
Gail Damerow (Editor) Damerow,
author of several books on chickens and a breeder of dairy goats, has
compiled a primer on easy-to-raise and companionable farm animals that
will provide a good return for the novice farmer. The introduction
acquaints the reader with all the pros and cons of keeping farm animals,
covering such topics as manure, noise, and dealing with the neighbors. Six
types of livestock are covered in depth, starting with chickens as perhaps
the easiest to keep, then moving through ducks and geese, rabbits, goats,
sheep, and finally dairy and beef cattle. Each chapter introduces the
animal and describes breeds; discusses the animal's personality and how to
handle it; provides information on feeding, housing, and routine care; and
finally tells how to deal with the animal's output of eggs, milk, fiber,
or meat. Simple, clear, and straightforward instructions and advice help
the new animal keeper with any questions, and line drawings illustrate
many concepts.
Hen
and the Art of Chicken Maintenance : Reflections on Raising Chickens by
Martin Gurdon (Author) Owning
chickens is fast becoming the latest in metropolitan chic. If you can't
own them, you'll still want to read about them-witness the recent success
of books such as Extraordinary Chickens and Living With Chickens.
Another book is soon to hit the poultry bestseller list: This hilarious
account of a rookie poultry-owner's experience raising birds in his
backyard. Move over Julia Roberts and Brad Pitt (both rumored to raise
chickens), Martin Gurdon has written the first "chicken memoir"
of its kind. Bound to be a classic, Hen and the Art of Chicken
Maintenance follows the Gurdon family through the ups and downs of
this wonderful hobby. In addition to providing eggs, the hens offer
distractions from everyday life-BB has terrific telephone etiquette, the
spirited but weak Yvette requires Gurdon to act as a personal trainer, and
Wimpy is soon renamed Psycho when she's allowed to brood three of her
eggs. The book chronicles the daily life of a chicken, including dust
baths, brutal pecking-order rituals, gender-bending encounters, and, for
its owner, the possibility of huge vet bills. The relationship between
bird and human is by turns heartwarming and bewildering, but always
entertaining. In fact, readers might even learn a thing or two about
raising chickens in this lively book.
ABC
of Poultry Raising by J. H. Florea (Author) Book Description Second,
thoroughly revised (1977) edition of probably finest guide available for
successfully raising small flock of chickens: how to get started,
equipment needed, controlling diseases and parasites, how to expand, more.
53 illustrations.

R. Runyan Identifying
Horse-Drawn Farm Implements is a guide to the identification of old farm
equipment that has been assembled to help those who have grown up since
the horse-to-tractor farming conversion identify the myriad of
horse-powered farm implements still to be found. The identification
process is simple and quick, and is based on the presence or absence of
such readily recognizable features as wheels and teeth. Photographs and
identifying features of essentially all of the types of equipment used in
the United States during the early part of the twentieth century are
included.

How
to Restore Your Farm Tractor by Robert N. Pripps. This book is a good
overview of tractor restoration. It follows the restoration of a Ford 9N
tractor to original parade ready condition and a Farmall to working
condition. It has chapters on each section of restoration such as
electrical systems, fuel system etc. While it describes the steps involved
in some detail for the two tractors being documented, it notes the
exceptions for others such as John Deere. This book will give you a good
feel for what tractor restoration is about and it will even give you some
detailed instructions for some of the work involved, but it will not be
the sole resource needed. Fortunately the author is well aware of that
fact and gives generous references as to where more information can be
found, not just other publications, but also societies and parts dealers.
Farm
Conveniences and How to Use Them by Anonymous,
Denis Boyles.Granted, if you live in the city and
have no land or tools, the primary use of this charming reproduction of an
1884 classic self-help book for farmers and homesteaders will be
entertainment and fantasy. But if you are living in the country or would
like to, the basic, straightforward wisdom in Farm Conveniences
will serve the modern homesteader just as well as those of the last
century. A collection of the best ideas garnered from farmers of the time
on shed-building, trapping, constructing fences and gates, and making
carts, a log boat, and other essential implements for rural agriculture,
it also includes advice on land management to prevent erosion, manure use,
and how to build shelters of many kinds for livestock and people. The
ideas were sound, practical, and well tested then and are surprisingly
useful even today for readers with an eye toward self-sufficiency and
homegrown agriculture.

addition, there are wells, irrigation equipment, and also advice on
gardening, caring for animals, how to prepare and handle fertilizers, and
even a simple but effective way to tie a bag. Farm Appliances is
not only a book filled with instruction on how to create these
labor-saving devices, but is also a record of the inventive talent that
revolutionized the process of farming.
Farm
Equipment: And How to Use It by Harry C.
Ramsower. This classic guide presents
practical information on virtually every aspect of farm equipment,
machinery, and organization. Originally published in 1917, Farm Equipment
and How to Use It surveys every topic of importance to the challenge of
equipping a successful and fully functional farm, offering useful and
handy advice on such issues as laying out the farm, lighting the farm
home, establishing sources of water, and arranging for sewage disposal for
the farm home. Additional sections provide detailed discussions of such
indispensable examples of farm equipment as tillage tools, seeding
machinery, manure spreaders, grain binders, and corn harvesters.
The
American Farm Book by R. L. Allen. Usually
ships in 24 hours. This pocket-sized guide to
American agriculture-the "most healthful, the most useful, the most
noble employment of man," according to its author - pays tribute to
the soil, the irrigation methods, and the grain, roots, fruits, and rice
that helped make America what it is today. First published in 1849, The
American Farm Book offers valuable and relevant information, including:
how to identify soil, and know which kinds work best with which crops;
instructions for preparing the land for planting by plow and irrigation;
the purpose of meadows and grasses; tips for getting rid of weeds, bugs,
and fungus; uses for corn, barley, rye, and wheat; methods to prevent rot
and decay in potatoes; the health benefits for cattle of certain grains
and vegetables; basic suggestions for farm buildings, fences, and shade
trees. Illustrated throughout with vintage line drawings, this wonderful
piece of Americana will intrigue, inform, and intoxicate small-scale
farmers and armchair gardeners alike.

Feed/Forage/Graze
Nutrient
Requirements of Sheep
The NRC has included information on macro- and
micro-nutrient needs of sheep, how these needs were determined, and their
sources in foodstuffs. Variation in quantity of specific nutrients in
grains/grasses are also noted by location or area. Excellent manual for
development of your own feeding program based on facts rather than
folklore feeding practices.
Handbook
of Poultry Feed from Waste This
book provides detailed scientific information on the processing of
agro-waste material to provide inexpensive alternatives to non-traditional
feedstuffs for use in poultry and farm animal nutrition. The types of
waste material considered for such use include waste from poultry
processing plants, hide and tanning, municipal refuse, and sewage sludge.
Special attention is given to waste from fruit, vegetables, and brewers'
dried grain. For each type of waste considered, detailed information on
yields, chemical analysis, nutritive values, and biohazards is given.
Special attention is paid to detailed processing methods with layouts. As
the inclusion of wastes in diets can cause problems of palatability and
feed acceptability, these important aspects are thoroughly discussed and
solutions given. The aim of this book is to help create new feedstuffs for
poultry and farm animals from the agro-industry and to mobilize the
neglected waste as a feedstuff to lower the price of animal products such
as eggs, white and red meat, milk, etc. Furthermore, this book aims to
contribute to the campaign against hunger in the developing world and to
reduce the competition between animals and human beings for cereals and
pulses. Accordingly the global pollution problem will be reduced.
Feeding
Systems and Feed Evaluation This
book provides a quantitative/modelling perspective on animal feeding
systems and feed evaluation. Topics covered include feed evaluation
methods, current feeding systems, and mathematical modelling of whole
rumen function, the lactating dairy cow and others. Written by leading
researchers from around the world, it is an essential reference tool for
researchers and advanced students.
Greener
Pasture on Your Side of the Fence... Henry
Forgues, Vermont dairy farmer "Bill Murphy's book saved our farm
and changed our life! It made it possible for our son to come back home to
the farm, which now that it is based on pasture will support two families,
rather than going bankrupt as we were when we fed in confinement. "
Grazing

livestock, and a color photograph. Includes a glossary.
Harvested
Forages Harvested
Forages deals with the subject of food for domestic animal feeding.
Such food is called "forage" and includes things like alfalfa
and other plants usually referred to as "hay." Topics include
the ways that this forage is produced, how it is harvested, and ways that
it should be stored. Other issues that are dealt with include various
criteria and measurement procedures for assessing forage nutritive
quality, potential health hazards associated with particular plants and
plant toxins, and various issues of plant growth, pest control, and soil
fertility--among other topics. This book is essential for any institution
with a strong program in range sciences, animal sciences, animal feeding
and nutrition, and related programs.
The
Evolving Science of Grassland Improvement... Grasslands
around the world provide most of the world's milk and wool and much of the
meat. The growing world population and global warming have put increased
pressure on the world's grasslands. Ross Humphreys has played a leading
role in the development of grassland science and in this authoritative
review discusses how it has evolved over the past sixty years. Using the
proceedings of the International Grassland Congress since 1937, Humphreys
identifies the shifting emphasis of the science, assesses the current
situation and provides perspectives for its future direction.
Temperate
Forage Legumes The
major temperate forage legumes are of global importance in the sustainable
productivity of ruminant feed in the developed world. This book brings
together in one volume all aspects of their basic biology and associated
production practices.
