Bees

Beekeeping For Dummies(r) by Howland Blackiston, Kim Flottum (Paperback - February 2002)  A honey of a book on an increasingly popular hobby. For both enjoyment and profit, beekeeping has become a booming enterprise. In this easy-to-follow guide, author Howland Blackiston removes the mystery from this pastime, offering inventive solutions to many common — and uncommon dilemmas. Realize the benefits of keeping bees, from aiding the environment to enjoying homemade honey and wax products.

Beekeeping: A Practical Guide for the Novice Beekeeper Buying Bees, Management, Rearing, Honey Production by Werner Melzer, et al.  This little book is my "giveaway" to people interested in getting started in bees. It's not a complete guide by any means, but gives someone interested a basic overview. It has outstanding photos and graphics on the beekeeper's year. Has a European slant many may not like, but I found quite interesting. Great price for size and content.

The New Complete Guide to Beekeeping by Roger A. Morse (Paperback - November 1994) A classic text from one of the world's experts on bees. This comprehensive guide will give beginners all they need to start and maintain a healthy bee colony, while experienced beekeepers will find advice on expanding into new areas of the business and how to refine their skills. Subjects covered include: • Buying a colony of bees • Managing bees throughout the seasons • Selecting equipment and a good apiary site • Preventing swarming • Extracting, processing, and selling honey • Controlling pests, predators, and diseases • Rearing queen honey bees Photographs and technical drawings illustrate the text, and appendixes define technical terms, list sources of supplies, and tell you where to go to find more information. The World History of Beekeeping and Honey Hunting by Eva Crane (Hardcover - October 1999) Crane was director of the International Bee Research Association for a quarter of a century. Here she updates and expands her 1983 by incorporating subsequent findings and bringing the coverage up to the present. She begins with the evidence of rock art for prehistoric bee hunting and archeological indications of early beekeeping. She traces the probably route of transmission of hives within the Mediterranean region, northern Europe, eastern and western Asia, and the Americas. The technology, she shows, changed little from the earlier days until the 19th century, and has been tinkered with considerably ever since. Other topics include the history of bee products and the symbolic importance of bees, hives, honey, and wax in both literature and religion. Her text is abundantly supported with black-and-white illustrations.
From Where I Sit: Essays on Bees, Beekeeping, and Science by Mark L. Winston, Eva Crane (Paperback - April 1998) A scientist before he was a beekeeper, Mark L. Winston found in his new hobby a paradigm for understanding the role science should play in society. In essays originally appearing as columns in Bee Culture, the leading professional journal, Winston uses beekeeping as a starting point to discuss broader issues, such as how agriculture functions under increasingly complex social and environmental restraints, how scientists grapple with issues of accountability, and how people struggle to maintain contact with the natural world. Winston's reflections on bees, beekeeping, and science cover a period of tumultuous change in North America, a time when new parasites, reduced research funding, and changing economic conditions have disrupted the livelihoods of bee farmers. Hive Management: A Seasonal Guide for Beekeepers by Richard E. Bonney. The beekeeper's year begins with a late winter hive inspection and ends with "putting the bees to bed" in the autumn. Richard Bonney believes that each beekeeping activity should be performed with an eye toward the overall well-being of the colony, as part of an integrated year-round program of hive management. Long-term success in beekeeping can only be achieved by understanding the intimate lives, behaviors, and motivations of honey bees -- the factors which govern the life of each colony. Richard Bonney explains the reasons behind common practices that many beekeepers perform without really knowing why. He also stresses when to take timely actions that will prevent problems in future seasons.
The Beekeeper's Handbook by Diana Sammataro, et al. Diana Sammataro and Alphonse Avitabile have revised and expanded their clear and comprehensive guide to cover changes in beekeeping. They discuss the crisis created by the parasitic bee mites. In less than a decade, for example, Varroa mites have saturated the North American honeybee population with disastrous results, devastating both managed and wild populations. The new edition of The Beekeeper's Handbook covers mite detection and control as well as the selection and testing of bees that may have some tolerance to mites.Serves as a comprehensive well-illustrated introduction for beginners and a valuable reference for the experienced beekeeper. Keeping Bees by John Vivian, et al. This well-illustrated guide introduces the beginner to the fundamental aspects of apiculture, from the construction of the hive, through bee management, honey harvesting and on to candle making. Apiary expense estimates are up-to-date and information on bee diseases and the ``Africanization'' problem is accurate and current. Aspiring bee keepers striving for self-sufficiency will find this book unique, as it gives directions for the building of hives, frames, and a wax foundation molding press. Bee hobbyists less interested in projects requiring wood working skills would be better served by Rober A. Morse's A Year in the Beeyard.
Beekeeping: A Practical Guide by Richard E. Bonney (Paperback - November 1993) Whether you're a beginning beekeeper or one with a season or two of experience, Richard Bonney tells you how to keep bees, not just have them. This new book by the acclaimed author of Hive Management offers vital, up-to-date information about how to acquire bees, install a colony, manage a hive, take a crop of honey, prevent and treat Varroa and tracheal mites, and learn about Africanized bees. A Book of Bees : And How to Keep Them by Sue Hubbell (Author) "The real masterwork that Sue Hubbell has created is her life," David Quammen wrote in the New York Times. This book is, like its author, a unique achievement. Weaving a vivid portrait of her own life and her bees' lives through the seasons, Hubbell writes "about bees to be sure, but also about other things: the important difference between loneliness and solitude . . . the accommodating of oneself to nature"
The ABC and Xyz of Bee Culture The 40th edition of this classic in its field leaves nothing to chance. Everything a beekeeper needs to know about obtaining and keeping bee hives is contained therein. Updated by expert Roger Morse, the book contains, in encyclopdia form complete information on the honeybee, including undated information on the "africanized bee" (aka the infamous "killer bees") and the threat they pose to the hobbyist beekeeper. Excellent data is included on the various diseases and parasites which also threaten the beekeeping industry. If you keep bees or want to keep bees or simply want to know more about this unappreciated, but vital aid to our modern agriculture, you need this book.  The New Starting Right With Bees If you need a book to help you begin to keep bees, this is it. I am a certified beekeeping instructor and use this book in every class that I teach. It gives you all the basics that you need to successfully start your own hive of bees. Care must be used when applying the information found in the book because every region of the U.S. is different. But with a little assistance, from a local association, you will be able to apply the knowledge gained and be rewarded with a fine crop of honey.
Discovering Beekeeping (Discovering Series No. 236) by Daphne More (Paperback - March 1999)  This book is intended for the person wishing to keep one or two hives for their own pleasure & profit, probably in their own garden. It will also provide a sound basis for those who may want to extend their activities at a later time. Beekeeping As a Business by Richard Jones (Spiral-bound) About the Author Richard Jones is Director of the International Bee Research Association.
Beekeeping in the United States This handbook, prepared by the U. S. Department of Agriculture, provides readers with a better understanding of beekeeping in the United States. Some topics discussed are the life history of the honey bee; bee behavior; breeding and genetics of honey bees; queens; packaged bees, and nuclei; managing colonies for high honey yield and crop pollination; diseases and pests of honey bees; and effects of pesticides on honey bee mortality. Practical Beekeeping (Hardcover)
by Clive De Bruyn. This book is by far the most concise and readable book on the subject of beekeeping that I've read to date. In hindsight, I might not agree with everything that he has to say but I think its a very good book for beginners. The author takes great care not to assume any prior knowledge on behalf of the reader. I found this a very useful reference book for dipping into having first read it through from start to finish.

Caring for Your Miniature Donkey by Bonnie R. Gross Reviewer: A reader from Burlington, NJ USA. This book says it all, although the section on feeding was somewhat vague. I really enjoyed the photographs. Although I do not have a mini donkey, I'm sure giving some though to it now. These animals are marvelous creatures. I think instead of another dog I'll go for a mini donkey and call him Kansas.
Horses, Hitches and Rocky Trails by Joe Back "Horses, Hitches and Rocky Trails" is often referred to as the packer’s bible. Written in the language of the West, it is a complete and often humorous presentation of the method of packing horses into the wilderness. Donkey Driving by Vivan Ellis. Donkey Driving by Ellis and Claxton offers completely sound and comprehensive advice to the beginning driver. Even if donkeys are not the intended driving equine, the advice is still excellent. It covers the various training methods needed, plus harness, vehicle styles, and activities. Altogether quite wonderful, and has the addition of a tiny bit of donkey humor. I have recommended it more than any other driving text.
