General & Miscellany
Arts & Crafts Art and craft is a subject in which all children can take
part. Even the smallest child enjoys using bright colors, and sticking
things together. This book is a collection of ideas for teaching art and
craft to any child. It was written for children with learning difficulties
in mind, but it would be equally applicable for children aged 3 - 9 years
old. Most of these activities can be completed within ten minutes, so they
are ideal for children with limited ability and short attention spans. It is
very helpful to both child and teacher if the teacher demonstrates what
she/he wants the child to do (as well as telling them) before starting the
activity. This makes it much easier for the child to understand.
The Alphabet of Art (a notation system for visual design) This
site explains, in simple terms, the elements of visual design. Once you
understand the Alphabet, you'll be able to "read" pictures and other works
of visual art and understand why they work the way they do.

Framing, Matting & Mounting Art Works On
Paper - Ask Mrs. Biddington
Framing a work of art is a significant expense--sometimes nearly as costly
as the art work itself. So, it is important that you know the proper
materials and procedures for framing, whether you will be doing the job
yourself, or taking it to a professional.

Hand-drawn Holograms - Science Hobbyist
a technique for drawing holograms directly upon a plastic plate by hand. It
sounds impossible, but you can make holographic images of floating polyhedra,
words, 3D star fields, opaque objects, etc. No laser, no isolation table, no
darkroom, no expensive film plates. This takes nothing more than a compass
and some scraps of Plexiglas. Too cool!
Please Do Touch: How To Create A Texture Art
Wall - DigsMagazine.com We
came up with this silly idea that it would be neat to find cool textures, to
keep them on our walls where we could run our fingers over them whenever we
happened to be passing by. We made it because we thought it would be funny,
and fun. And because it was a cheap way to do something kind of interesting
with some empty wall space. The texture wall has been a hit with friends as
well, who seem to know what they’re supposed to do with our oddball wall art
without having to be prompted.
How To Make A Large Harmonograph
A harmonograph is a pendulum-based drawing board that produces beautiful
curvaceous drawings. After you give the large hanging platform a gentle
push, gravity works its magic while a pen records the results. Each swing is
almost identical to its predecessor: the minute discrepancies are
responsible for the remarkably sinuous curves.

Animation Tutorial
In these modern days, Web animators may not have to spend 17 hours hand
painting cells to make Dopey wink, but bandwidth, platform, and browser
issues make animation for the Web its own special hell. Anna and Emily have
navigated many circles of this hell, and they make animation ... well, if
not easy, then easier. The dynamic duo start off by giving profiles of the
main animation technologies out there, before moving on to explain, in
detail, how to use them.
Animation Toolworks Library of Articles Teaching Animation, from
Primary to Graduate. Articles in the teachers' section are contributed by
teachers, students and artists in residence. They contribute articles to
help other colleagues. They contribute articles, sometimes as little as a
one sentence explanation that works well with students. They are paying back
the other contributors who have helped them.
GIF Animation on the WWW GIF Animation is the poor man's format.
Simple, but efficient enough for many animations. Just enough to give a
little pizzazz to a personal page without the shock of Director's price tag
, bulk of Java programming, trouble and limited view-ability of plug-ins, or
the inaccessible CGI server-push. Poorly written, but extensive information.

Animation 101 - ThinkQuest
"The starting point for learning about the
animation industry and the many forms of animation, mainly Claymation,
Computer Animation, and Hand Drawn Animation. We will teach people some tips
and tricks of how to create their own animations and we will also teach by
showing how the pros do it. Each section has information on current events
in the industry and tutorials on the subject. We will also provide amateur
animators a place to display their work and help out other animators create
works. We also wanted to create an Animation teaching site because it is one
of the more lacking topics on the web."
The Bouncing Ball The first thing taught to an animation student
is the bouncing ball. This tutorial breaks it down into a simple series of
steps, and shows the basics of flipping and rolling animation paper.
The Walk Cycle Most people can't wait to make a character walk.
It's an advanced topic, but I've tried to simplify it here. This lesson
shows the four main poses of a walk cycle, and how to build the walk around
them.
The Clay Animation & Stop Motion Page
the only web page devoted to people interested in the
somewhat mysterious technique of clay animation. There really are no
secrets, there are just not many people who do clay animation for a living,
and can tell how it is done. Here you will learn what tools, clays, and
techniques you need to know to create some wacky characters for animating,
or just to have fun with. After all, that's the most important part!

Improvisation Games for Comics Writers and
Illustrators - Creating Comics
The goal of these exercises is to create for writers and illustrators a
structured environment in which they may develop their craft. These games
are creative and may even be competitive. The structure allows artists to
experiment with a variety of methods of collaboration. I am most interested
in very short subjects that rely on commonplace situations and stock
characters -- the standard bag-of-tricks used by improvisation theater.
So You Wanna Be A Comic Book Artist? (career
advice) - So You Wanna.com?
You don't have to be
Picasso, but if you have the drive (and the ability to draw circles and
squares), we can guide you along the path to comic book celebrity status. It
won't be easy. Breaking into the comic book biz is just like breaking into
show biz - you're up against a whole field of aspiring wannabes who think
they're the next Tom Cruise (or, in the case of comics, the next Jim Lee).
You've got the talent, but how do you ensure that your work gets seen? Read
and learn, baby.
Art Appreciation
Appreciation of The Art of Chinese Calligraphy
Calligraphy is an art dating back to the earliest day
of history, and widely practiced throughout China to this day. Although it
uses Chinese words as its vehicle of expression, one does not have to know
Chinese to appreciate its beauty. Because in essence, Calligraphy is an
abstract art. While viewing a Western abstract painting, one does not ask,
"What is it?" When viewing Chinese calligraphy, one need not ask, "What is
the Chinese word?"
So You Wanna Fake An Appreciation for Art?
Some say that art is man's loftiest endeavor -- a
mortal attempt to be like God, to create something where there was nothing,
to move the spirit and touch the soul. Others say that art is a load of
sheep dip. Most of us fall somewhere in between, able to appreciate a pretty
picture, but in constant amazement that "patrons" will pay $700,000 for a
painting of a red square on a white background. The first thing you should
know is that some art really is crap. The catch, though, is that nobody can
agree on which art is crap. This means that if you learn the tricks, then
you can fake an expertise in art analysis that would make Andy Warhol proud.

Learn how to draw - graphite pencil and charcoal
This tutorial contains techniques to create
realistic looking artwork. I will try to update these pages
occasionally to provide fellow charcoal and graphite pencil artists
insight into my methods. This first tutorial will show you what pencils and
blending tools I use to render both rough and smooth textures. Once
you know how to create realistic looking textures, you're on you way to
creating much more realistic looking artwork.
Draw! - a resource created by AccessArt for students studying "A"
Level Art, or on Foundation and Undergraduate courses, and for Lifelong
Learners of all ages. The resource has been split into two main sections: "Thinking,
Looking and Drawing" which introduces the ideas behind the skills which
make up drawing, and "Making a Drawing" which helps students question
what a drawing is, and how they can push drawing further. Illustrations and
animations accompany each page, and drawing exercises designed to widen your
experience of drawing. Most importantly of all, we hope this resource will
enable you to think about drawing as an inspirational activity, which is as
much about thinking and experimenting as creating artistic masterpieces. The
exercises outlined should be accessible to all students, regardless of their
artistic experience.

WetCanvas (choose from 'Content Channels' at left: genres, colored pencil,

WC), was founded in 1999 in an effort to better leverage technology to
assist visual artists in sharing information and making new contacts and
friends. From its humble grass-roots beginnings, the site has grown into a
valuable resource - a veritable gold mine of information, serving painters,
sculptors, illustrators, and other artists.
Acrylic Layering - Susan Egbert
The term
"acrylic layering" refers to the use of many washes of acrylic one over the
other to produce vibrant, glowing colors. This is a very versatile technique
that can be used in any style from realistic to abstract.
Introduction To Acrylics - Elfwood
To cover all the techniques available to an acrylic painter in a short
article would be next to impossible, but I can cover how to get yourself
started, what tools you need, and talk a bit about various methods, styles,
and techniques. Of course, the best teacher for any kind of art and any
medium of art is practice. Only by actually working with a medium will you
learn the little quirks of that medium, and learn to use those quirks
as part of your art. That is what makes any medium special, and why an
artist would choose pastels over colored pencils for one piece, and acrylics
over oils in some other.
A Diminutive Survival Guide To Oil Painting -
Elfwood Many artists
consider oil painting annoying, frustrating or just plain "so hard it's not
worth getting into". Others think it's good only for landscapes a-la Bob
Ross, and that it's just impossible to achieve that smooth, clear blending.
I've met some people who'd stare at my paintings and go, "You did this with
oils? No way!" Way. And you can, too. What you'll need first of all (and in
my opinion, most importantly) is lots of patience and faith that you can and
will conquer this *evil* medium.

Watercolor Technique - Elfwood
watercolor is a medium that scares and discourages many people, because it
is unpredictable, difficult or impossible to correct or change, it leaks, it
streaks, and makes the paper buckle. All of these concerns are true, yet
when we look at a masterfully done watercolor such as those of Winslow Homer
or Andrew Wyeth we all wish we could do the same. That is because watercolor
is a free transparent medium which always convey spontaneity even though the
approach is most deliberate.
Watercolors - Handprint
You'll find here information on all aspects of watercolor painting: papers,
brushes, paints, color theory, painting techniques, instructional books, and
more.
Egg Tempura or You Wanna Paint With What? -
Elfwood Egg tempera is a
method of painting which was largely popular in the early Renaissance.
Botticelli's Birth of Venus (Otherwise known as the Venus on the
half-shell) and other, much less famous-paintings were done in the medium.
Egg tempera, not to be confused with the tempera or poster paints you get at
the store, consists of egg yolk, water, and pigment. The downside to this
composition is that you have to make your own paint fresh every time you
want to paint. The up side is that you get complete control over your paint.
Paint being argumentative? Too pale? Well, just add some more pigment, and
there you go.
Oil Pastels - Elfwood
For some
obscure reason, most aspiring artists tend to avoid oil pastels...and it is
true that they are messy and inaccurate, but once you become familiar with
them, the advantages will soon outweigh the disadvantages. The advantages?
Oilpastels come in a number of colours, they are lightfast, forgiving, easy
to use and slow drying, you can work on a piece for several months.
The Society Of Tempera Painters (make egg
tempera paint, make gesso, technique tips...)
This site is dedicated to the art of tempera painting in all its forms. It
contains information for the novice and professional tempera painter and for
those who are interested in the historical to the contemporary tempera
painting art scene. For the novice there are technical aspects of the medium
which cover methods such as making paint, gesso panels, pigments and much
more with contributions from the inter-active forum. If you cannot find what
you are looking for on this site then take part in
The Inter-Active Forum where any queries will be answered by regular

Woodworker This easel is
built out of cherry, which is a fairly strong wood that darkens with age to
a beautiful reddish tone (not that anyone will notice once it has been
splattered by dabs of paint).
How To Stretch Artists' Canvas - Rex Art
It is relatively easier to stretch raw canvas than primed, but considerable
skill is required to prime the canvas with a quality ground. It is also
easier to stretch primed cotton and Polyflax canvas than primed linen
canvas, as the linen fibers do not have much stretch. Oil primed (and in
particular; double primed) canvas requires the most care in stretching, as
there is practically no stretch, and it is not at all unusual to have to
remove some tacks at wrinkled areas, Restretch and re-tack, before getting
the canvas perfect.
