Children Home Alone
and Babysitter Age Guidelines Most States do not have regulations or
laws about when a child is considered old enough to care for him/herself or
to care for other children. Currently
Illinois and
Maryland have laws addressing this topic. States may have guidelines or
recommendations. These guidelines are most often distributed through child
protective services and are administered at the county level.

Being 13 What's on their minds? TIME takes an inside look at an age of
mystery and challenge By NANCY GIBBS. Ask 13-year-olds what they want for
their birthday, and the answers range from a puppy to a laptop to getting
their belly button pierced to "my girlfriend's virginity." New ballet
slippers. My own room. Cash. Thirteen-year-olds have more power than
discipline, more weapons than shields. They demand more respect from their
parents and show them less. The Motion Picture Association of America
understood the nature of the age when it invented the PG rating--parental
guidance suggested--as though it knew that from here on, parents can guide,
they can suggest, but kids are making more decisions, taking fewer orders.
They have absorbed the family's values because the years of Total Parental
Control are coming to an end.

Study: More kids exposed to
online porn - Kids & Parenting - MSNBC.com Forty-two percent of Internet
users aged 10 to 17 surveyed said they had seen online pornography in the

and had not sought them out, University of New Hampshire researchers found.
Cyber
Divide Widens: Kids Outsmarting Their Parents - Child protection The gap
is widening between what kids do online and what their parents think they
do. A new study shows that children are online twice as much as their
parents think they are and nearly one-quarter are getting away with
forbidden online activities, according to security company Symantec, which
commissioned Harris Interactive to do the poll. Parents also may be
disconcerted to learn that the survey showed that 23% of children have had
an encounter with a stranger on the Internet and 7% reported having met
someone in the real world from the Internet.

Gender,
Identity, and Language Use in Teenage Blogs This study examines issues
of online identity and language use among male and female teenagers who
created and maintained weblogs, personal journals made publicly accessible
on the World Wide Web. Online identity and language use were examined in
terms of the disclosure of personal information, sexual identity, emotive
features, and semantic themes. Male and female teenagers presented
themselves similarly in their blogs, often revealing personal information
such as their real names, ages, and locations. Males more so than females
used emoticons, employed an active and resolute style of language, and were
more likely to present themselves as gay. The results suggest that teenagers
stay closer to reality in their online expressions of self than has
previously been suggested, and that these explorations involve issues, such
as learning about their sexuality, that commonly occur during the adolescent
years.
School-Age Child Care: Keeping Children Safe and Helping Them [PDF] The
majority of school-age children have parents who work. These children need
safe places to go during their out-of-school hours. Research has repeatedly
demonstrated that good activities for school-age children after school can
help children’s development, safety, and school performance as well as
reduce risk-taking behaviors such as the use of drugs, alcohol, and tobacco.
Yet, far too many children are left to care for themselves, which places
them at greater risk of a range of problems. Low- income children, who have
the greatest need for after-school programs, are less likely to have access
to constructive activities during their out-of-school time

Child and Teen Checkups Vision Screening Tips For Children Detection of
eye abnormalities is extremely important in infants and children (under age
6) as irreversible vision loss (amblyopia) can be prevented before the
visual pathways are fully developed. Myopia (nearsightedness) may not be
identified until age 11 and is important to screen for in older children.
Age is not a perfect predictor of maturity. [PDF] From kindergarten
through high school, youth pass through four developmental stages.
Generally, child development specialists have divided up the ages and stages
of development into these categories: 5-8 year olds--Early Childhood 9-12
year olds--Middle Childhood 13-15 year olds--Early Adolescence 16-18 year
olds--Middle Adolescence This publication will focus on Early Childhood
Programming for 4-H Youth.
Adapting the Food Guide Pyramid for Children The purpose of this study
was to define the target audience for a food guide that would be adapted for
children by recommending subgroups within the 2- to 18-year age range and
ranking the subgroups in order of greatest need based on dietary
requirements and user demand for nutrition education materials.
