Technology and Young Children Technology plays a significant role in all aspects of American life today, and this role will only increase in the future. The potential benefits of technology for young children's learning and development are well documented (Wright & Shade 1994). As technology becomes easier to use and early childhood software proliferates, young children's use of technology becomes more widespread. Therefore, early childhood educators have a responsibility to critically examine the impact of technology on children and be prepared to use technology to benefit children. [Link recovered 7/11/11]

Building a Home Library for Ages 4 - 7 [PDF] Here are suggested contemporary book titles either for a great start to or enhancement of your home library. Recommended Immunization Schedule [PDF] The tables give catch-up schedules and minimum intervals between doses for children who have delayed immunizations. There is no need to restart a vaccine series regardless of the time that has elapsed between doses. Use the chart appropriate for the child’s age. (Many schools will not allow your child to attend unless/until they have received these vaccinations. SSRsi does not necessarily believe that all children should receive all vaccinations - it is a difficult choice between having to trust the pharmaceutical companies and the welfare of your child.)

Child and Teen Checkups Vision Screening Tips For Children Detection of eye abnormalities is extremely important in infants and children (under age 6) as irreversible vision loss (amblyopia) can be prevented before the visual pathways are fully developed.   Myopia (nearsightedness) may not be identified until age 11 and is important to screen for in older children.

Age is not a perfect predictor of maturity. [PDF] From kindergarten through high school, youth pass through four developmental stages. Generally, child development specialists have divided up the ages and stages of development into these categories: 5-8 year olds--Early Childhood 9-12 year olds--Middle Childhood 13-15 year olds--Early Adolescence 16-18 year olds--Middle Adolescence This publication will focus on Early Childhood Programming for 4-H Youth.

Age Guidelines for Toys and Bikes These guidelines for ages when children are ready to use wheeled toys and vehicles come from the US Consumer Product Safety Commission's Age Determination Guidelines: Relating Children’s Ages To Toy Characteristics and Play Behavior

Questions about child readiness, starting age for music lessons ... This is by far the most frequently asked question about music instruction. Our experience shows that children who function at a 6-year- old level or higher--no matter what age they are-- are most likely to have a positive experience in instrumental instruction. A personalized assessment  may reveal that your 4-year-old functions like a 6-year-old (visually, auditorially and socially). Our experience indicates that a child who functions at this minimum level, (no matter what their age,) has a great chance of having a positive experience as they learn to play an instrument. And remember, A POSITIVE BEGINNING IS A MUST!

Prevalence of Four Developmental Disabilities Among Children In 1991, CDC established the Metropolitan Atlanta Developmental Disabilities Surveillance Program (MADDSP) to monitor the occurrence of mental retardation, cerebral palsy, hearing loss, and vision impairment among children aged 3--10 years in the five-county metropolitan Atlanta area (Clayton, Cobb, DeKalb, Fulton, and Gwinnett). In 1996, autism spectrum disorders were added to the surveillance program to determine their prevalence and monitor trends in the prevalence over time. MADDSP continues to estimate the prevalence of these five disorders in the metropolitan Atlanta area and serves as a model surveillance program for 17 other states that conduct disability surveillance (i.e., Alabama, Alaska, Arizona Arkansas, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Maryland, Missouri/Illinois, New Jersey, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Utah, West Virginia, Wisconsin.
