Terrorism 101- A How-To Guide
The 180-page volume, seized from the Manchester, England home of a bin Laden
disciple, offers jihad members guidance on subjects such as assassination,
forging documents, and preparing poisons in its 18 chapters. The terrorism
manual was placed into evidence last year by prosecutors during the federal
trial of four men accused of involvement in the 1998 bombing of U.S.
embassies in Kenya and Tanzania. All four defendants were convicted and
sentenced to life in prison.
MI5 | Methods of Attack
Terrorists can murder and maim using many different methods of attack. As
well as using tried and tested methods, Al Qaida and associated networks are
able to innovate, as was demonstrated on 11 September 2001.
Listing of Terrorist Incidents
Incidents listed by tactic, weapon, targets, and
casualties, as well as date and geographic location.
US reveals al-Qaeda's chilling methods - War
on Terror. A new US government
intelligence bulletin describes in the greatest detail yet al-Qaeda's
techniques for assessing potential targets, extolling the lethal power of
flying, shattered building glass and advising that kerosene and tires are
effective for a deadly arson attack. "The focus is on maximizing the
destructive and killing power of an attack," the bulletin says...
The Psychology of Terror
It is the psychology of terrorism that causes it to command so much
attention compared to other threats to life. To give this some context, the
death toll of the September 11th attack in the USA, the most devastating
terror attack in US history, was placed at 3,016 by the 15th December 2001.
The death toll in that country from murder has been about 16,000 a year in
recent years...
CNS - The Historical Roots of Current
Terrorist Tactics and Methods. by
Sammy Salama & Kathleen Thompson, November 21, 2003: The bloody scenes from
Istanbul the target of four devastating bombings in a single week have
become all too familiar in recent years. Indiscriminate suicide bombings
against civilian and military targets have become a constant fixture in
Middle Eastern politics. This tactic has been used in the Palestinian fight
against Israeli occupation, Ba'athist insurgency against the American
presence in Iraq, and in al-Qa'ida global terrorism targeting civilians in
Africa, Asia, the Middle East and the West. Organized systemic suicide
bombings have become a very popular method of warfare in the Middle East,
used by various political and religious groups to further their goals and
objectives. This trend that started in the 1980s in war torn Lebanon has
become a popular tactic that is widely used by various regional militant
groups, and multinational terror organizations with global reach. The
historical roots of Middle Eastern suicide warfare methods and tactics can
be traced to early Islamic history.
Why Asad's Terror Works and Qadhdhafi's Does
Not. by Daniel Pipes 1989 The
adoption of terrorist methods by state authorities is perhaps the most
important new development of recent years. Politically motivated violence
against noncombatants has evolved in the Middle East from a tool used
exclusively against the state into an instrument of state. In addition to
helping clandestine groups fight the central authority, terror now serves
weak states against more powerful ones. In this sense it constitutes a novel
form of military conflict. This development makes terrorism politically far
more important than it would be if it remained confined to small
organizations hiding from the law.
Saddam's Terror Training Camps What the documents captured from the
former Iraqi regime reveal--and why they should all be made public. by
Stephen F. Hayes 01/16/2006, Volume 011, Issue 17 THE FORMER IRAQI REGIME OF
Saddam Hussein trained thousands of radical Islamic terrorists from the
region at camps in Iraq over the four years immediately preceding the U.S.
invasion, according to documents and photographs recovered by the U.S.
military in postwar Iraq. The existence and character of these documents has
been confirmed to THE WEEKLY STANDARD by eleven U.S. government officials.
City Journal Winter 2004 | What Makes a
Terrorist- by James Q. Wilson by
James Q. Wilson: Until the nineteenth century, religion was usually the only
acceptable justification of terror. It is not hard to understand why:
religion gives its true believers an account of the good life and a way of
recognizing evil; if you believe that evil in the form of wrong beliefs and
mistaken customs weakens or corrupts a life ordained by God, you are under a
profound obligation to combat that evil. If you enjoy the companionship of
like-minded believers, combating that evil can require that you commit
violent, even suicidal, acts...
Al Qaeda’s terror style spreading
The evolution of terror methods has prompted a debate within the
intelligence community over the best tactics to pursue, knowledgeable
officials said. One option would be to focus on destroying al Qaeda in an
effort to wither the franchises. The other would be to devote almost equal
attention to destroying the smaller, regional groups, a strategy Pillsbury
said would be more politically sensitive and would require broader
intelligence.
The Terrorism to Come by Walter Laqueur -
Policy Review, No. 126 Terrorism
has become over a number of years the topic of ceaseless comment, debate,
controversy, and search for roots and motives, and it figures on top of the
national and international agenda. It is also at present one of the most
highly emotionally charged topics of public debate, though quite why this
should be the case is not entirely clear, because the overwhelming majority
of participants do not sympathize with terrorism...
