Hijacking Survival Guidelines The guidance below focuses on avoiding violence and achieving a peaceful resolution to a hijacking. This guidance was developed prior to September 11, 2001 when two hijacked airliners were flown into the World Trade Center and one into the Pentagon. Since then, there has been considerable public discussion of a more active and aggressive reaction to the initial announcement that a plane is being hijacked. As of this writing, the U.S. Government has not developed new guidelines for how to react to a hijacking. The appropriate reaction may depend upon the presumed purpose of the hijacking -- the hijackers' goal a suicide mission to use the airplane itself as a bomb, take hostages to gain publicity for a political movement, or a simple desire to escape to another country.

How to Survive a Hi-Jacked Commercial Airline  This article reads like it was taken directly out of an FAA/DHS Handbook and really doesn't provide much in dealing with the situation aggressively. Still, the pre-boarding advice is wise and, let's face it, most people are not inclined to aggressively confronting terrorists. Turtle-ing up may be the best defense...

Aviation Security Civil aviation security exists to prevent criminal activity on aircraft and in airports. Criminal activity includes acts such as hijacking (air piracy), damaging or destroying aircraft and nearby areas with bombs, and assaulting passengers and aviation employees. Today, aviation security is high on the list of priorities of air travelers, the Federal Government, and the international air community. In the earliest days of aviation, however, aviation security was only a minor concern.

Drive alive to stay alive It has become increasingly difficult to steal motor vehicles, with all the anti-theft devices, such as immobilizers, gear-locks, etc. These steps have resulted in a dramatic increase in vehicle hijackings. The hijacker has the element of surprise and this is a concern. The increasing retrenchment and the high unemployment figures are also factors. This is easy earned money and the already well-established syndicates will buy these vehicles from the hijacker. Vehicle hijacking is an organized business, run according to business principles and based on thorough planning. Specific vehicles with specific characteristics are ordered beforehand and efforts have to be made to meet the requirements of such orders. These vehicles will then be resold to the already predetermined buyer.

Hijack Deterrent Scientists say it is not hard to stop terrorists from using commercial airplanes as weapons of mass destruction. Because most large, commercial aircraft have the capability to fly, and even land, on autopilot, it is technically possible to install systems that would allow control of airplanes to be taken away from the cockpit in the event of a hijacking. Though the crew and passengers would still be in danger, the hijacker would be unable to steer the plane toward a target like the World Trade Center Towers, thus eliminating much of the incentive for hijacking in the first place. But there is question whether this could causes other dangers and if pilots ever agree to it.

BBC - h2g2 - A Hijack on the High Seas - Part One The hijacking in October 1985 of a Mediterranean cruise ship attracted the personal involvement of the Presidents of Italy, Egypt, the USA and various other countries.
