Created in March 2003,
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is the largest investigative
branch of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The agency was created
after 9/11, by combining the law enforcement arms of the former Immigration
and Naturalization Service (INS) and the former U.S. Customs Service, to
more effectively enforce our immigration and customs laws and to protect the
United States against terrorist attacks. ICE does this by targeting illegal
immigrants: the people, money and materials that support terrorism and other
criminal activities. ICE is a key component of the DHS “layered defense”
approach to protecting the nation.
Our mission is to protect
America and uphold public safety. We fulfill this mission by identifying
criminal activities and eliminating vulnerabilities that pose a threat to
our nation’s borders, as well as enforcing economic, transportation and
infrastructure security. By protecting our national and border security, ICE
seeks to eliminate the potential threat of terrorist acts against the United
States.
Targeting
center the brains behind anti-terror efforts
The adage that “Knowledge is power,” is proved
daily at Customs and Border Protection’s National Targeting Center. The
brainchild of CBP Commissioner Robert C. Bonner, the targeting center is the
centralized coordination point for all of CBP’s anti-terrorism knowledge.
Using sophisticated information-gathering techniques and intelligence, the
NTC provides target-specific information to field offices ready to act
quickly and decisively.
Accomplishments Numerous individuals with terrorist connections have
been removed from the United States before they could have inflicted harm
against the homeland. At the same time, ICE has broken previous records in
terms of detaining and removing immigrants illegally entering our country.
ICE is responsible for policing, securing and ensuring a safe environment in
which federal agencies can conduct their business.
Visa violators targeted in crackdown ~ More than 350 people who have
committed crimes or are suspected of terrorist links have been arrested in a
federal crackdown on foreigners with visa violations, part of a broader
effort to prevent Al Qaeda from disrupting US elections. Agents with US
Immigration and Customs Enforcement, a Homeland Security Department
component, are matching identities of visa violators nationwide with names
in secret government terrorism databases in hopes of finding Al Qaeda
operatives.

US sweep nets 2100 illegals - US Security - MSNBC.com In a blitz
that began May 26, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has arrested
nearly 2,100 illegal immigrants across the country. Officials said the raids
are aimed at child molesters, gang members and other violent criminals, as
well as people like Da Silva who sneaked back into the country after a judge
threw them out. The crackdown is called Operation Return to Sender.
ABC News: Federal Sweep Results in Arrests of 375 Gang Members The
arrested gang members include many from the notoriously violent MS-13 gang,
which has become a top concern of the FBI and U.S. Immigration and Customs
Enforcement. The two-week operation, overseen by Immigration and Customs
Enforcement, was part of a Department of Homeland Security effort called
Operation Community Shield, which was launched in February 2005, initially
to take down members of MS-13. The effort was expanded in May 2005 to go
after all criminal gangs, such as the Latin Kings, 18th Street Gang, Big
Time Killers, Asian Dragon Family and the Surenos.
Worksite
Enforcement: Under this new strategy, ICE is targeting unscrupulous
employers of illegal aliens, seeking to initiate criminal prosecutions and cause
asset forfeitures. ICE believes that the serious nature of these actions on
culpable individuals will be a more sufficient deterrence to those who may not
share the goal of fostering a sound and legal workforce. These aliens are
vulnerable to exploitation by terrorists and other criminals. ICE works with
employers in these cases to identify and immediately remove illegal workers from
sensitive facilities and locations where they are in a position to cause harm.
