Water Wells Tutorial. Folks, I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw this site. It is absolutely amazing! This tutorial shows new drillers how to construct safe water wells. There are also technical details and instructions for experienced drillers. You can even print out and disseminate the tutorial with their permission!

Wells Hand Dug Wells Construction: Hand Dug and Hand Drilled. Most of
the materials, tools, and methods covered in this manual are applicable
throughout the world in a variety of local situations. The techniques are
designed to be useful in the rural areas of most developing countries.
Step-by-step plans outline construction materials and techniques to be used
where skills may be limited. Although all potential situations cannot be
covered, this manual provides enough background to allow workers to assess
unusual situations, and determine what available techniques might be useful.
Ground
water: Wells There's a good
chance that the average Joe who had to dig a well in ancient Egypt probably
did the work with his hands, a shovel, and a bucket. He would have kept
digging until he reached the water table and water filled the bottom of the
hole. Some wells are still dug by hand today, but more modern methods are
available. It's still a dirty job, though!
EPA Private Drinking Water Wells > Basic Information > Dug Wells
Dug wells are holes in the ground dug by shovel or backhoe. Historically, a
dug well was excavated below the groundwater table until incoming water
exceeded the digger’s bailing rate. The well was then lined (cased) with
stones, brick, tile, or other material to prevent collapse...
UNDERSTANDING WATER WELLS By William Ashe. This paper tells how to dig a
well that provides safe drinking water for human consumption. Wells for
animals and irrigation can be constructed to a much lower standard.

Don't dig
down In a twist to the usual practice of digging
deep bore wells in search of water, Mohammad decided to try scouring for
water horizontally. His success at this unusual method has earned him the
nickname 'adda-bore', and many satisfied clients.
Shree Padre reports.
HOW TO DIG AND TAKE CARE OF WELLS [PDF] When centralized
water supply is absent, provision with water, first with drinking water, is
very important. Dug and drilled (artesian) wells are used for extraction of
drinking water from water-bearing layers...
Well Digging:
Modified Chicago Method. For making hand dug wells safely, cheaply and better.
The original Chicago Method was developed in order that deep
foundations could safely be excavated by hand to depths in excess of 40
meters in clay soils having no significant water-bearing inclusions. This
modified method is suitable for water wells in lateritic and clayey soils
where the water is expected to accumulate by seepage from the lower part of
the excavation. Great article!
Sinking a Drive Point Well.
Interesting. Only good down to 100', though.
Sludger Technique
(Nepal) Sludging is used extensively in many parts of Asia to bore holes of
25mm to 150mm in diameter to depths of up to 60 meters. The water table must
lie within 6.5m of the surface and the strata must be soft alluvial deposits
such as those found in the river flood plains of Bangladesh, Nepal and
northern India.
Well-Jetting Technique
(Nigeria) Well-jetting is a simple
technique for inserting small diameter wellscreens into shallow sandy water
bearing aquifers. Unlike conventional boreholes which require heavy drilling
equipment, well-jetting is carried out by hand using just one or two
portable engine pumps to produce a powerful jet of water.
Hand Dug Village Wells
(Uganda) Water from the ground has many advantages for rural people in
developing countries. It is usually free from the bacterial contamination
associated with surface water in regions where sanitation facilities are not
common. Hand dug wells are another source of water being developed in the
Kabarole district of Uganda...

This manual is a guide for engineer personnel responsible for planning,
designing, and drilling wells. This manual focuses on techniques and
procedures for installing wells and includes expedient methods for digging
shallow water wells, such as hand-dug wells.
Forager Drill
Cable percussion (cable tool)
drilling is the oldest, simplest, and most reliable technology available of
water well drilling. It will drill any material and is completely self
contained - requires no mud, mud pits, pumps, chemicals, compressors or
hammers, yet will drill through rock. See also:

Hand Powered
Percussion Drill (Liberia) The
percussion drill is one of the oldest known tools for making holes in the
ground to get water. Records show that it was used by the Chinese in 1100 BC
and it still is a very popular method of drilling today. The early
percussion drills used strips of bamboo tied together with a heavy metal
weight on the tip.
