Take steps to protect yourself from dangers of rural driving When you're driving on a highway in a rural area, you're at greater risk for a fatal crash than when you're driving in the city. You need to protect yourself when driving in the country, says John Shutske, farm safety and health specialist with the University of Minnesota Extension Service.

Rural Driving Situations. Rural roads account for about 40% of all vehicle miles traveled and over 60% of all speed related fatal crashes. As we look at these statistics how can we identify hazardous situations in our rural environment. How do rural roads affect them as beginning drivers? How many students drive to school on rural roads? How many of them have encountered dangerous situations on these roads ( deer, cows, farm machinery pulling in front of them, unplowed roads, road construction, etc.)?

Some tips for driving on ice! You don't have to live in a wintery climate to encounter icy roads and hazardous roadways. In temperatures at or just above 32-degrees, a thin layer of water can turn to or cover ice, causing extremely dangerous, slippery driving conditions.

Deer goes airborne, crashes through car Years ago, when Butler Township Police Chief Gary Garman was working in Illinois, he heard about a deer jumping from a slope and dropping like a four-legged bomb through the top of a convertible that was driving by. Up to the other day, Garman thought that was one of the wildest deer stories he'd ever run across.

Driving on Ice As weather conditions change, so do road conditions. During the winter, you may find yourself stuck on a patch of ice or snow. Racing the engine won't help you need traction to get out.

Driving Tips for Family Safety on Rural Roads at Harvest Bruce MacKellar - Van Buren Agricultural Agent As the harvest season continues, I would like to take a brief moment to remind motorists that patience is an important virtue when following or meeting agricultural harvest equipment on rural roadways. Weather, rather than a time clock, dictates to farmers when field operations must be completed and how much of the potential crop might be left to harvest and sell. Massive equipment, moving from field to field harvesting grain and grapes, often take up more than a single lane of rural roadways even if the operator is driving as close to the trees on the far edge of the shoulder as possible.

Winter Driving with an SUV Snow, ice, rain, and fog are all of the accompaniments of winter that make driving especially dangerous in any vehicle, including Sport Utility Vehicles and four wheel drive pick up trucks. While having 4 wheel drive in a vehicle can greatly improve road traction, 4wd does not automatically eliminate winter driving dangers.
