Most self defense situations arise because we haven't been paying attention to the environment around us. Though some incidents may be unavoidable, this does not mean we shouldn't have seen it coming... and been prepared for it..

How To Get The Truth Out of Anyone! Compiled By: John J. Webster From: "Never Be Lied To Again" By David J. Lieberman, Ph.D.: In an ideal society there would be no need for lies. But we live in a world of deception. And whether you want to play or not, you’re in the game. The question is, do you want to win?

Freedom From Fear: Spotting Trouble Before it Happens One of the most-asked questions during my street survival training is, "What am I going to see right before an attack?" That's a good question. It tells me the student is concerned about avoiding the situation altogether, and wants as much time as possible to maximize his chances of survival...

THREAT ASSESSMENT Threat evaluation process consists of two parts: 1) collecting information via constant observation and fixation of changes in the environment; 2) determining on the basis of available (fractional, as a rule) information existing risks and their classification by two groups - the ones which can be avoided and the ones which cannot (the last ones should be subject to detailed analysis). Only then necessary measures are worked out to reduce the threat and its consequences to a minimum. If you employ security personnel, it is their business, but you should inform them about all your suspicions and problems concerning your safety. Cases, when definite criminals or criminal groups are known to your security guards are quite rare. Usually the nature of threat is determined, on the basis of features, typical for all potential assaulters.

Surveillance Detection Program Throughout the years there have been kidnappings and assassinations that change the way we view Executive Security. These incidents make great learning tools, and act as standards for those involved in training.

Situational Awareness – Zanshin: At the top and bottom of the force continuum is situational awareness. The Karate term for this is zanshin. Literally, "zanshin" means something like "remaining mind," or "continuing awareness." Zanshin applies to your awareness of the world around you. You notice the people around you – how they stand, how they carry themselves, what is in their eyes – because you need to be prepared to interact with them. You are present in the moment. The greatest self defense tool you have is between your ears. When you are aware of the world around you, you can head off and avoid 99.44% of the situations which might force you to deploy a weapon. Even Gichin Funakoshi, the "father of modern Karate" said avoidance was the best strategy, and, if confronted by an armed [with a knife] opponent, run if you can. In the same way, if you are planning on going somewhere that you think you’ll need your battle rifle, two backup pistols and a kevlar vest, just don’t go there. If you find yourself somewhere that doesn’t "feel right," leave. A little bit of common sense can spare you of a lot of grief and lawyer bills. If you can’t avoid the situation, your zanshin will prepare you to respond effectively and appropriately.

HOW TO DETECT SURVEILLANCE AND SHADOWING. PART I. Prior to a serious crime, criminals (if only they are not laymen) always gather data which should ensure successful realization of the criminal plan. Routes, work schedule, way of life, daily routine, environment, habits, appearance and distinctive marks of the target are specified. Whenever possible photo or video shooting is carried out. Information about the target's security guards, their professional and personal qualities, tactics, equipment and armament is also obtained.

HOW TO DETECT SURVEILLANCE AND SHADOWING. PART II. COUNTERSURVEILLANCE. For effective and covert detection of shadowing countersurveillance technique is often used. Countersurveillance is observation of "tails", shadowing the target, by onlookers, placed at temporary points along the route. The fact is that detectives, shadowing the subject, will most likely look quite natural in the eyes of the subject. But for detached onlookers their activity may be rather inadequate. For example, their attempts to disappear from the eyes of the subject when he turns back can be imperceptible for the subject, but near-by people, who know whereat to focus their attention, will spot them. Therefore countersurveillance enables to reveal the fact of shadowing, determine its performers, and possibly, the sponsor. The data obtained as a result of countersurveillance will help to determine the place and time of the planned assault.

HOW TO ELUDE SHADOWING After shadowing is detected, you should determine what actions to undertake. Do not panic and try to hide – it may be a preventive measure on the part of somebody (your wife, for example). But on the other hand, the danger should not be underestimated - in most planned kidnappings, muggings or assassinations the victims are under surveillance for a period of time prior to the confrontation attacks. In this case shadowing is a signal that something bad is planned against you.

HOW TO SPOT A SUICIDE BOMBER The basic weapon of a suicide terrorist (martyr or "mujahidin") is an explosive device. The bomb or the so called martyr's belt is a curved explosive plate with little bags filled with steel balls, nails and nuts which are fixed on it for splinter effect. The bomb is strapped to a chest with a wide belt. The explosive is set off with an electric detonator or a radio-controlled fuse. Explosive devices can be also transferred in suitcases, packages, backpacks, perambulators, etc.

HOW TO DETECT A CONCEALED WEAPON While realizing their plans, criminals carry out actions which can be spotted by an attentive observer. By a number of signs one can detect those, who try to conceal weapons.

HOW TO INTERPRIT BODY LANGUAGE AND FACIAL EXPRESSIONS In terms of personal safety, skill and ability to confront an armed abuser is far from being the most important thing. It is much more important to notice sings of imminent threat as early as possible, in order to have enough time to avoid it, or at least prepare to repel the attack. A person, as a rule, does not control his/her posture, gestures, facial expression, and they frequently give out his/her latent aspirations. Understanding body language is a skill that can enhance your life. The skill is useful not only at the moment of confrontation with potential abuser, but also in dealing with people - clients, colleagues, loved ones, etc.

HOW TO KEEP YOURSELF SAFE IN A MASS CROWD For a correct assessment of possible threat you should keep in mind that a crowd can be dangerous and not dangerous (harmless). A harmless crowd may consist of bystanders or passers-by, people in recreational areas, tourist groups,  etc. Crowds of the first type are formed at rallies, demonstrations and other political events, as well as music concerts, football matches, etc In very crowded places, the crowd itself is dangerous. Avoid the dangerous crowd. Do not bump into the frenzied group of mob if you take to streets. Better you cross the road to the sidewalk across. Or, simply stay at a safe distance.

Avoiding Criminal Assault by Goshin: For the individual private citizen, the best defense against crime is avoidance. Simply put, don't be there or don't be the chosen victim. "Duh, Goshin," you say, "no kidding?" Seems overly simplistic? Ah, but the devil is in the details...

Using Your Environment Wherever you go, you have to watch out for life’s blind spots, dark areas and corners. This is not an easy thing to do as life becomes more complicated. These areas, contrary to what many people write about, cannot always be avoided either. If you exit your home, your vehicle, your place of business/employment, you take a look around. It seems so simple, yet so many people just start chunk’in across the parking lot, sometimes weaving in and out of parked cars with careless abandon. They might be "looking" but are they thinking about what they are looking at? Their environment...
