SSRsi received the following e-mail request from
Richard:
"It seems like there must be some floor plans/layouts
which are more suited to defense against home invasion or attack. I would
like to see some articles on this. Not referring to construction
methods/materials."
The problem with this request, as I see it Richard, is that no two homes are
exactly alike. Even the cookie-cutter homes in developments are quickly
modified by their inhabitants and their possessions. Developers and
architects design homes for usable space and resale value (according to
local code) - and rarely, if ever, consider building for defense against
home invasion.
If the question is "what to consider when building a home, with a view
towards defending it against breech and, if that fails, a defensible
interior floor plan," then there are (I'm sure) many opinions on the
subject. I have not found any specific articles on the subject, though I
have spent a couple of hours looking. The links on this page (below)
generally assume that you have purchased or live in a normal home, and give
advice on how to use what you've got or how to beef it up.
Given unlimited funds, you might build, from the ground up, a home which
would be near impregnable - though "completely
impregnable" is impossible. Any defensible position can be taken. At
best, you can only hope to make YOUR place too difficult to bother with.
I suppose there are floor plans and layouts that are better suited than
others, but with today's weapons no floor plan is going to matter unless the
place is built like a bunker. Bullets and grenades just don't respect the
average materials used in home construction.
My guess is this is the reason there aren't any articles on the subject.
Home defense and Early warning systems: [author unknown] These are
BBS/NG tips, so please take care in implementing them.
Warning!
How
to make and use a bump key. Opens nearly any lock in seconds, and much
easier to do than lock picking. If you think you have a decent lock on your
door, then you might want to try this and see just how decent your lock
really is. Is it safe? Are YOU safe?
Home Defense
Strategies and Tactics - The home defense strategy includes tactics that
may be used to protect the home. Burglars hit a home every 15 seconds. Why
does a burglar pick one home instead of another? Burglars look for inviting
"targets of opportunity," homes that are easy targets. To minimize the
chances of being caught and to minimize the punishment if caught, burglars
prefer to pick unoccupied homes. So one of the first things to do to protect
your home from a burglar is to insure it always appears occupied.
RESIDENCE SECURITY: Your residence or estate should be the most difficult target to penetrate and
the place where you and your family can feel safe and relax, free of worry
concerning personal injury, kidnapping, invasion, and burglary. Safety of a
residence can be provided both by technical and physical (human) means of
protection.
Garage Door Hacker: The purpose of including this article is not to
encourage building or using a GDH, but to illustrate the threat that exists and
must be accounted for. These are the instructions and schematic for a garage
door hacker. It modifies an existing door opener to run through every possible
code.
Hardening Your Home Crime Prevention is defined is the anticipation,
recognition, and appraisal of a crime risk, and the initiation of some action to
remove or reduce it. You can have a significant effect upon the security of your
residence by taking a few moments to assess its weaknesses and a few more
moments to take simple actions (many of which cost nothing but your time or a
bit of physical exertion) to eliminate or strengthen those weaknesses.
Designing a Home Security System Making your home secure isn't a matter
of buying certain product; it's an overall strategy that combines locking the
house tightly, eliminating the ways that intruders can conceal themselves on
your property, and giving the appearance that you are home, whether you are or
not.
Home Security and Safety Handbook is a comprehensive resource full of
useful advice, and you can also take advantage of the services of
Project CLASP if you want an assessment of your home and how you can
make it more secure. You can also download the free
mystuff software to make it easy to document your property so that in
the event of burglary, you have a better chance of recovering it..

Home Security - Home Security Articles & Tips A home intruder generally
has two requirements for a potential score: he has to be able to get in and out
quickly, and he must remain unseen. If either one of these conditions isn't met,
usually he will move on to the next house. A great place to slow down an
intruder and expose him is at the property line.
Home Defense News was created following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks
on the United States. It became obvious following this tragedy that every
citizen needs to be aware of the various threats facing his or her personal
safety, and how to defend against infringements on that personal safety.
WARNING: Annoying pop-up for subscriptions.
Home Defense There is an old challenge to those who take pride in their
refusal to have a gun in their home. The idea is that they should put up a sign
for all passersby to read that says "No gun in this home." For some strange
reason, there aren't many takers. Apparently the conviction against possessing a
firearm isn't so strong that people are willing to advertise it at the risk of
their own safety. While it may seem from that first blurb that we are pro-gun,
that's not the case. We are not pro or anti-gun. What we are is pro-personal
responsibility. Before you even consider getting a weapon for "home defense,"
there are a few issues you must take into consideration.
My Home Defense - Low-Tech Home Security My home has probably the
safest, most reliable, and manageable home defense programs ever invented. It
has never gone off due to error, loss of power, or any other reason unless
needed. It is not connected to phone lines, databases, or warning systems
outside of my home. It is simply a VERY large Chow dog, three 12 gauge shotguns,
two 15 year old boys (twins) that know how to use them (much to the horror of
the local school system), two automatic handguns (45s) for me, and a revolver
for my wife. All are loaded (including the dog with a set of VERY BIG TEETH) and
ready. Coupled with neighbors that depend on each other and watch out for the
properties around us it is more than enough to defend our homes.
Home Defense We are no longer naive. We will need to defend our homes,
indeed our very lives, from now into the future. Only call 911 for an antidote
for poison. The status quo is that the bad guys are there and gone before the
police can even respond. All they can do is take information for the next of
kin. Besides, the Supreme Court has already ruled that police have a duty to the
community at large, not to any one individual. That's right - the police have
"No Affirmative Duty to Protect" us, affirmed by many court decisions!
Home handgun defense: simplicity suffices by Massad Ayoob Issue #54
The fact that a basic handgun will get the job done was reinforced for me
recently at the New Hampshire State Championships of IDPA, the International
Defensive Pistol Association. IDPA was developed by a group of pistol champions
and tactics instructors who wanted a skill test environment for the kind of
handguns cops and lawfully armed citizens use for protection.
American Handgunner: Selecting Home Defense Ammunition Something is in
your nest with your mate and your cubs. It's a carnivorous predator, and it has
intruded with harmful intent. Instinct tells you what to do. Destroy the
invader! But that same instinct screams an equally imperative order: do not harm
the very ones we must protect!
Property crime prevention There are few things more violating than
coming home and discovering you door has been kicked in and your personal
belongings gone through. The sick, throat clenching terror when you look at the
empty spot where your car was parked or the incredible anger and outrage to see
a window smashed and items stolen from you. And that is exactly what it feels
like to discover you have been the victim of a property crime.
Self Defense Articles :: Home-Defense: Home Invasion Home-defense is
pretty important. After all, you probably spend a lot of time at home. Let's

Home Security - Burglary Prevention Advice by Chris E McGoey, CPP, CSP,
CAM: Your home is your castle...or is it? Are you really safe once you get
home and lock your door? In an open society your home should be the
sanctuary for you and your family. Your home is the only environment where
you have control over who can get close to you or your family. Protecting
your home and family from criminal intrusion should be high on your list of
priorities.

Panic Room or Safe room
Home security should be important to everyone whether you live in a
house or an apartment. Knowing your home is protected provides peace of mind
both when you are away and when you are home. Home security is important
even if you have outstanding public safety agencies (police, fire, highway
patrol, etc.) in your area. There are far more homes than there are police
officers, not to mention a plethora of skilled thieves, so it's important
for you to do everything possible to make your home secure rather than just
relying on others.
Home Security Lighting The form of lighting currently found many
domestic locations is a 250 or 500 watt tungsten halogen floodlight
controlled by a movement sensor (passive infra-red, PIR). This is
unfortunate, as in many locations it is inappropriately installed and other
forms of lighting could make for a better choice.
Home Security If a thief is determined to enter your property, he
probably will, if he has enough time and is not disturbed while in the
process. By thinking about improving the security of your property, you can
deter the thief, by making his task more difficult.

Defending Your Home Several people have mentioned that there are few
sites on the web that tell gun owners, especially the novice gun owner, what
to do in the event of someone entering their home. Equally important are
those things you should not do. Since many people buy a gun for self-defense
it would seem logical to discuss some of the issues surrounding
self-defense, especially in your home. Whether you have a firearm that you
think you'll use for home defense or you're contemplating buying one you
should read this page.
Refuge Defense (about 2/3 of the way down the page) There are a number
of things to be considered in defending a fixed position. The flanking
