A Guide to the Development of On-site Sanitation The book has three parts. Part I deals with the background to sanitation - health, sociological, financial and institutional issues, and the technologies available for excreta disposal. Part II provides in-depth technical information about the design, construction, operation and maintenance of the major types of on-site sanitation facility, while Part III describes the planning and development processes involved in projects and programs. Annexes on reuse of excreta and sullage disposal are also included; although connected with on-site sanitation, these are primarily off-site activities.

A History Of Plumbing Engineering By Jim Olsztynski. A 1,500-year gap exists between the advances of the ancient world and our modern era of sanitation. Think how good you have it with CAD programs, pumps and other electronic gizmos to design, control and monitor the flow of water. Imagine that these tools were not available to you. How would you like to try designing workable plumbing systems using only primitive materials and natural energy sources like sun, wind, currents and gravity? (The thought occurs that this might not be a bad exercise for an engineering class.)
