Aging US Power Grid USA TODAY The nation's power system may be
showing its age. Recent heat wave-related blackouts in California and New
York are at least partly being blamed on creaky transformers, circuit
breakers and cables. And smaller outages in cities such as Detroit, Chicago
and Houston will be investigated to see if aging parts played a role, says
Stan Johnson of the North American Electric Reliability Council.
Preventing
Electrocutions Associated with Portable Generators Plugged Into Household
Circuits When power lines are down, residents can restore energy to
their homes or other structures by using another power source such as a
portable generator. If water has been present anywhere near electrical
circuits and electrical equipment, turn off the power at the main breaker or
fuse on the service panel. Do not turn the power back on until electrical
equipment has been inspected by a qualified electrician.
American Red Cross ~ Generators information, developed by the Red Cross with technical advice from the
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the National Fire Protection
Association (publisher of the National Electric Code ®) and the U. S.
Consumer Product Safety Commission, is provided to address questions about
using a generator when disaster strikes.
Portable Electric Generator Safety Tips
Portable electric generators offer great benefits when outages affect your
home. Below are guidelines for safely connecting and operating portable
generators. Additional information is available about
selecting and purchasing generators.
Portable Generator Hazards Portable generators are useful when
temporary or remote electric power is needed, but they also can be
hazardous. The primary hazards to avoid when using a generator are carbon
monoxide (CO) poisoning from the toxic engine exhaust, electric shock or
electrocution, and fire. Every year, people die in incidents related to
portable generator use. Most of the incidents associated with portable
generators reported to CPSC involve CO poisoning from generators used
indoors or in partially-enclosed spaces.
NASD- Standby Electric Generators
An emergency source of power is important for any farm with mechanically
ventilated production facilities, bulk milk handling equipment, mechanical
feeding equipment or facilities requiring constant and continuous heat (such
as brooders). On such a farm, a standby electric generator is a good
investment, possibly preventing costly losses during a power failure.
PowerPedia-Motionless Electrical Generator -
PESWiki The Motionless
Electrical Generator (MEG) is an electromagnetic generator without
moving parts which includes a permanent magnet and a magnetic core including
first and second magnetic paths. The MEG is alternatively pulsed to provide
induced output current pulses.
Portable Electric Generators Blackouts, brownouts and
storm-related power outages can really disrupt your daily routine.
Installing a backup generator may seem like a great idea, but it is not that
easy. The backup generators have to be connected very carefully to your
electrical system.
Generating interest in standby power sources | ajc.com Jon Spiers
thought his home was sitting pretty after Hurricane Katrina's storm surge
knocked out electrical power for miles around his Ocean Springs, Miss.,
home. After all, he had not one but two portable generators filled with
fresh gas and ready to go when authorities sounded the all clear for Spiers
and his family to return home. But when the evacuee pulled the starter
cords, neither generator fired up. Both had been submerged and the fuel
supplies fouled.
Energy Family Part 1 - Off The Grid - Popular Mechanics Energy
independence is a compelling concept these days, not just for nations but
for individual homeowners as well. But it's not easy to achieve. My wife,
Penny, and I have spent the past eight years living on 40 rolling acres of
northern Vermont in a house that's not connected to the electrical grid. We
run a fairly labor-intensive mix of solar panels, a gas-powered generator,
propane tanks and a wood stove to meet our energy needs. Our system has
become more efficient over the years, though there's still room for
improvement.
Select the Right Portable Generator after a Disaster - VCE
Power outages can leave a home without power for lighting, cooking,
refrigeration and pumping water. Portable generators can be bought to
provide substitute power. However, the generator must be properly sized to
start the appliances and equipment you want to run.
Don't discount a generator, especially a diesel
generator, as your primary power source
An independent energy system that uses a generator as its primary
power source can be efficient and cost-effective in its initial setup. The
key is to make it part of a system instead of a sole source of power.

How Generators Work
AC Motors and Generators
(Nice Graphics) The turning of a coil in a magnetic field produces motional
emfs in both sides of the coil which add. Since the component of the
velocity perpendicular to the magnetic field changes sinusoidally with the
rotation, the generated voltage is sinusoidal or AC. This process can be
described in terms of Faraday's law when you see that the rotation of the
coil continually changes the magnetic flux through the coil and therefore
generates a voltage.
How an Electric Generator Works
Short article, really cool animation.
Electrical generator - Wikipedia An electrical generator is a
device that produces electrical energy from a mechanical energy source using
electromagnetic induction. The process is known as electricity generation.

Simple D.C. generators contain several parts, including an armature (or
rotor), a commutator, brushes, and field winding. A variety of sources can
supply mechanical energy to the D.C. generator to turn its armature. The
commutator changes the alternating current (A.C.) into direct current as it
flows through the armature.

Make a
Solar Power Generator for Less Than $300
Build a generator from a
lawn-edger motor. This generator was built using a 3 horse power
Briggs and Stratton horizontal shaft motor, a GM 65 amp automotive
alternator (with built in voltage regulator), a used car battery, a pulley
and V-belt, a 12 volt cigarette lighter outlet box with fuse, a DC to AC
power converter, a low voltage control switch, a scrap of 3/4" plywood, a
few scraps of 2 x 4 lumber, 4 wheels, and two battery cables. We also used a
custom designed bracket manufactured for Epicenter to make it all come
together in a snap. Better presentation can be found at

Induction
Generator Within every home in America there are motors that can be
operated as generators. They may not be labeled as generators, but they will
function just the same. These motors are often called "squirrel cage motors"
and are in washing machines, dryers, water pumps and other devices too
numerous to mention. Besides being numerous and cheap, they will generate AC
voltage of the purest sine wave. They use no brushes and do not produce any
RFI. (Radio Frequency Interference) A motor converted to an induction
generator will power fluorescent and incandescent lights, televisions,
VCR's, stereo sets, electric drills, small power saws and other items.
Build Your Own 12vdc
Generator [PDF] This small, easy to build,
engine/alternator is the answer to a burning RE question. What do we do when
the sun doesn’t shine, the wind doesn’t blow, and the creek dries up? This
generator is a backup power source for times when our RE sources don’t meet
our demands. It is optimized to do only one thing — properly recharge
batteries on demand.

Generator, spinning ... This is
an AC electric generator which lights up a tiny incandescent light bulb. The
generator is made from a hollow-ended cardboard box with a nail through the
center. The box has many turns of fine copper wire wound around it, with
four large magnets clamped around the nail. When the nail and magnets are
spun fast by hand, the little light bulb lights up dimly. See also:

Pedal Generator Some investigation was done by Alex Weir on suitable
automotive (car) generator for use with 4-man pedal system. The Bosch 9 120
690 170 - a 55 amp alternator-generator appears suitable. Driving speed
would have to be approx 3500 rpm, which is attainable by using 60 rpm drive
through bicycle sprockets to a 200 rpm payshaft with a 600 mm diameter
driver pulley and 'eaton vee belting' hollow flexible plastic belt drive to
a 35mm wooden or similar pulley.
Diesel
Why Use Diesel? Advantages and Benefits In today's world, where fuel
prices are increasing as a consequence of spiraling demand and diminishing
supply, you need to choose a cost effective fuel to meet your needs. Thanks
to the invention of Rudolph Diesel, the diesel engine has proved to be
extremely efficient and cost effective. Diesel fuel is less expensive
compared with gasoline because it goes through a shorter refining process.
And, diesel has a higher energy density, i.e. more energy can be extracted
from diesel as compared with the same volume of gasoline. Therefore, diesel
engines in automobiles provide higher mileage, making it an obvious choice
for heavy-duty transportation and equipment. Diesel is heavier and oilier
compared with gasoline, and has a boiling point higher than that of water.
And diesel engines are attracting greater attention due to higher efficiency
and cost effectiveness.
Diesel generator power is a sensible choice, especially when integrated into the
total system. Powering your homestead with free, non-polluting power from the
sun or from a hydro-electric system is the ideal way to go. But for some of
us, solar isn’t feasible. Some folks live where the sun rarely shows its
face throughout the four or five coldest months of the year, coincidentally
when we need the most power. Others operate home workshops and/or businesses
that require more power than any affordable solar array could possibly
develop. For those folks, diesel power can be a viable and efficient option.

CPSC and FEMA Warning of Gasoline-Powered Generators The U.S.
Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and the Federal Emergency
Management Agency (FEMA) have joined forces to warn residents not to use
gasoline-powered generators or charcoal grills indoors or in attached
garages because of the risk of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning. "If you want
to use a gasoline-powered generator when the power goes out, set it up
outside in a dry area, away from air intakes to the home," said CPSC
Chairman Hal Stratton. "And never use a charcoal grill inside because you
risk being poisoned by deadly carbon monoxide. Opening doors and windows or
operating fans to ventilate is inadequate and unsafe. Even with a CO alarm,
you should never use a gasoline- powered generator or a charcoal grill
inside."

Natural Gas & LP
Emergency Natural Gas Generator We live in a rural area and it is
not unusual to lose power for several hours or even days at a time. Without
electrical power I can get stuck outside because I had to have an elevator
to get upstairs and down. We have a natural gas connection in front of our
house so we installed a natural gas generator to provide power when we lose
electricity. The generator cost around $2,500 and the electrician and
Generac Transfer Switch was about $2,500 more. We installed it in 2001.
Mechanical
Bicycle Powered Generator
I skim a few Usenet newsgroups daily, among them
misc.survivalism and
alt.energy.homepower. Frequently
posters on these two groups will inquire about generating electricity using
a stationary bike coupled to some sort of generator. Most replies are to the
effect that while it's possible to do this, the amount of power output by
such a rig when pedaled by the average person wouldn't be worth the effort.
I wasn't convinced that this idea was a lost cause. I decided to build one
and see how well it worked...
Pedal Powered
Generator: Every morning, I pedal to generate electricity. The Pedal
Generator charges batteries, that run an inverter, that produces 110v AC,
that powers LED lights, the monitor on my computer, and many other small
battery-powered things. It is the most inspiring workout you can imagine.
Steward Community Woodland - How to build a
cycle generator This is NOT a set
of step-by-step instructions for a specific design. We have built quite a
few cycle powered generators, each one is different, based on what bits we
had available. This guide is intended to give you pointers and pass on some
of what we have learnt, but ultimately it is your ingenuity and the
materials and tools available to you that will dictate the design.

Safely Installing Your Standby Generator Even small, portable electric
generators - if they’re used improperly - can threaten you safety and the
safety of power company linemen working on the electrical system.
HONDA
Generator Owner's Manuals To get
an owner's manual for your generator, first determine the model name. All
Honda generators have a model name with a prefix that starts with "E" such
as EB500, EU1000i, or EG5000. The model name is usually on the case, fuel
tank, or near the control panel. Shop manuals will cost you. Owner's Manuals
are free.

Selecting a Generator:
Backup Power Bob Villa. Brownouts and blackouts cut your home's
crucial electrical supply. Backup power systems keep the furnace warm, the
refrigerator cool, and your home's security system online.
Home Generators Guide A device that can supply electricity to the
whole house during power outages is casually referred to as home generator.
Technically speaking, an electric generator is a device that converts
mechanical energy into electric energy. The AC power generators for
residential applications utilize engines (motors) to produce the mechanical
energy- the engine creates alternating magnetic field through a coil, which
induces electromotive force. (Since such devices include mounted together an
engine and a generator the more accurate term for them is engine-generator
set or a genset).
Select the Right Portable Generator after a Disaster Power
outages can leave a home without power for lighting, cooking, refrigeration
and pumping water. Portable generators can be bought to provide substitute
power. However, the generator must be properly sized to start the appliances
and equipment you want to run.
Power Calculators courtesy of
MacFarland Generators: These online calculators will assist you in
determining what size generator you may require or how to convert one unit
of electricity to another.
