The Coming Energy Crisis? All warning signs that existed prior to
the energy crises of 1973 and 1979 exist today. Various energy security
measures indicate that the potential for an energy shortage is high. As
submitted to Oil & Gas Journal for publication February 3, 2003
"Think gas is expensive now? Just wait. You've heard it before, but this
time it's for real: We're at the beginning of the end of Cheap Oil."
June 2004 issue of National Geographic
"Beginner's Guide to Oil Depletion" is elegant, compelling and well
researched. Revised and expanded in January 2004. The best introduction to
the oil depletion problem on the web.

The Coming Natural Gas Crisis In 2004, natural gas use is rapidly
increasing while reserves are rapidly declining. As recently as five years
ago, producers and consumers of natural gas thought that natural gas was the
abundant and non-polluting fuel of the future. Electric utilities were
encouraged to use natural gas as the fuel for almost all new power plants.
Now, natural gas depletion is a recognized fact for all of North America.
Favorable weather has prevented a crisis in March of 2004.

End of Oil Could Fuel 'End of Civilization as We Know It'
Opponents in a long-running debate over when the world will run out of oil
squared off Tuesday in a crowded room of scientists, reaching only one
conclusion: The supply of fossil fuels is fixed and the world economy will
eventually have to wean itself from oil.
What to do as oil peaks out: A geologist as
amiable guide, by By Jane Holtz
Kay, Christian Science Monitor [2005 May 17] "Hubbert's Peak," the point on
the graph that marks the apex of world oil production, has dropped below its
zenith. And, for Americans dependent on their economy's lifeblood, the news
goes against the grain of our optimistic belief in the eternal More. Whether
you consider the shrinking of that commodity as bringing grim times for our
manufacturing, driving, consuming nation, or, perversely, good times for a
planet overrun with the greenhouse gases it produces, one thing is sure:
There are life-altering changes ahead.

Oil Industry Statistics Compiling a list of "largest oil
companies" is a bit like comparing apples and oranges. The state-owned
national oil companies operate differently from the traditional businesses
we are accustomed to in the US. Also, should they be ranked by assets, by
reserves, by production, or by revenue? These categories give similar, but
by no means identical, lists. And are we talking about oil, or gas, or both,
or oil equivalent? The following table offers one ranking, based mostly on
information from the Oil & Gas Journal in 1999. For merged companies such as
ExxonMobil, I added the values for the predecessor companies. State-owned
companies are marked with a star*. Public companies like ExxonMobil only
hold about 18% of the world's oil reserves; the rest is owned by nations or
state-controlled companies.
The
Alternative Energy Institute is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, educational
organization. Historically, AEI's mission has focused on two areas: (1)
raising consciousness about the dangers of fossil fuel dependency and the
viable alternatives to fossil fuels, and (2) linking consumers with
suppliers of alternative energy. However, AEI is expanding its focus on the
basis that there is no progressive change toward sustainability without
taking a systemic approach that includes one essential element: community.
As a result, AEI is carving out a unique niche of raising consciousness
about community sustainability and providing action response opportunities
for individuals throughout the world.
US Energy consumption, production
and import trends We hear much
about a looming Energy threat, but is it for real? The answer is
emphatically YES!! This summary, and the separate USA and World sections
linked below, will tell you WHY. A cheap and reliable supply of energy is
the life-blood of America's economy, and the very basis of citizen living
standards and national security. Energy especially underpins our
transportation and our food supply sectors, as well as our homes, work
places, medical facilities, police and national security operations. Yet,
worryingly, America's per capita energy consumption increased during the
1990s, in spite of a declining US manufacturing base and despite importing
more manufactured goods than ever before (i.e. produced by other nations
using their own energy). And a rising population calls for more energy, not
less. [Link updated 4/18/11]

their own conclusions and act accordingly.
Dieoff Energy Synopsis
Petroleum geologists have known for 50 years that global oil production
would "peak" and begin its inevitable decline within a decade of the year
2000. Moreover, no renewable energy systems have the potential to generate
more than a tiny fraction of the power now being generated by fossil fuels.
Oil Production & The Hubbert Peak
Named after the late Dr. M. King Hubbert, Geophysicist, this website
provides data, analysis and recommendations regarding the upcoming peak in
the rate of global oil extraction.

US DOE Oil Production Estimate
a recent EIA presentation on estimates of the world conventional oil
resource base and the year when production from it will peak and then begin
to decline. A version of this presentation was given by former EIA
Administrator Jay Hakes to the April 18, 2000 meeting of the American
Association of Petroleum Geologists in New Orleans, Louisiana.
USGS World Oil Production
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) World Petroleum Assessment 2000 provides
estimates of the quantities of conventional oil, gas, and natural gas liquids
outside the United States that have the potential to be added to reserves in the
next 30 years (1995 to 2025). Excluding the U.S., the mean (expected) volumes of
undiscovered resources are 649 billion barrels of oil (BBO), 4,669 trillion
cubic feet of gas (TCFG), and 207 billion barrels of natural gas liquids
(BBNGL).
International Energy Agency
An intergovernmental body committed to advancing security of energy supply,
economic growth and environmental sustainability through energy policy
co-operation
World Energy Assessment Energy is essential to economic and social
development and improved quality of life. Much of the world’s energy,
however, is currently produced and consumed in ways that could not be
sustained if technology were to remain constant and if overall quantities
were to increase substantially. - Agenda 21, Chapter 9.9
Hubbert Centre
Assemble, study, and disseminate global petroleum supply data
CRYING WOLF: Warnings about oil supply -
Hubbert/Campbell Critic These
issues are hugely complex. A wide variety of political, economic and
geological factors affect oil production, and analysis requires an enormous
amount of data, much of which is either not readily available or is
unreliable. Few observers have the capacity to analyze the forecasts of
others, let alone make their own forecasts. Thus, as Vannevar Bush realized,
when an expert, particularly with a scientific background, comes forward
with detailed work and large quantities of (albeit hidden) data, it gains
almost instant respectability, particularly among editors who are not
familiar with the subject.

ASPO-USA
During the week leading petroleum producers, including Saudi Aramco and
Exxon Mobile, have been aggressively arguing that we don’t need to worry
about Peak Oil. A very good summary is given in People’s Daily Online,
Beijing, China (
read article ). The attack from Saudi Aramco came at an OPEC
conference in Vienna (
read article ) and from Exxon Mobil at a conference in Australia. An interesting notation is that Wall Street
Journal raised the question if it was a planed attack.
