What
is an Earthquake? An earthquake is
a trembling or shaking movement of the Earth's surface. Earthquakes normally
result from the movement of faults, quasi-planar zones of deformation within its
uppermost layers. Basically earth's tectonic plates shift every so often, and
the areas on the fault lines are the ones that feel it's results.
What Are We
Predicting Will Happen to Our Transportation System in Future Earthquakes?
ABAG has revised the estimates of road closures in future earthquakes to be
consistent with the scenario probability information released by the U.S.
Geological Survey in April 2003. The principal differences between this 2003
update and the 2002 version relate to likely earthquakes on three fault segments
- the San Andreas Peninsula, the San Andreas Northern Golden Gate, and the
Greenville fault segments.

REPORT ON EARTHQUAKE PREPAREDNESS FOR PARENTS OF ROSSMAN SCHOOL This
folder is based on a report that was given to Mrs. Betz called, NOTES ON
PREPAREDNESS FOR NATURAL AND MAN-MADE DISASTERS WITH EMPHASIS ON EARTHQUAKES FOR
ROSSMAN SCHOOL, prepared by Ken Seger with editorial assistance by Patt and
Jerry Welk. This report updates the older one and adds information for
homeowners and parents.

THE
EARTHQUAKE PREPAREDNESS HANDBOOK. The LAFD
Earthquake Preparedness Handbook is presented with both text and graphics in the
linked pages listed below. A
text
only version is also available to facilitate easy printing. "Our goal
in providing this information is to encourage you to prepare for a major
earthquake and to maintain that readiness. Part of becoming ready is having the
necessary supplies. Earthquakes, in our area, can happen at any time. They are
not totally predictable. There are long periods between episodes. This is why it
is important to maintain fresh emergency supplies through rotation of older
stock into daily use. The quality of life and the potential for survival are
greatly increased by being prepared."
Earthquake
Preparedness. The
west coast of Canada is the most earthquake-prone region of the country.
Residents of the west coast should expect, and be prepared for, a damaging
earthquake at any time. Emergency organizations recommend that residents should
be prepared to survive for at least 72 hours on their own. For detailed
information on earthquake preparedness, visit the British Columbia
PROVINCIAL
EMERGENCY PROGRAM website.
Reducing
the Risks of Nonstructural Earthquake Damage
The text is missing, but for those of us who saw the original, it's really not
all that necessary. The illustrations are here and you can figure out (pretty
much) what needs to be done from them.
Hazard
maps help save lives and property National
maps of earthquake shaking hazards provide information essential to creating and
updating the seismic design provisions of building codes used in the United
States. Scientists frequently revise these maps to reflect new knowledge.
Buildings, bridges, highways, and utilities built to meet modern seismic design
provisions are better able to withstand earthquakes, not only saving lives but
also enabling critical activities to continue with less disruption.

Earthquake Survival - How to
Survive a Devastating Earthquake There are
very few disasters as unpredictable as a quake. The good news is that if
you're well-prepared, you and those you care for can usually come out
unhurt. Secrets of Survival reveals how to ready yourself if and when the
earth begins to rumble beneath your feet.
Pilot Guides.com: How to Survive an Earthquake Earthquakes
are very much a part of life in California they are an integral part of
everyday life and culture. Dozens of tiny 'shakers' rattle the state each
week, unfelt beneath your feet, through the dozens of faults that crisscross
the West Coast. Locals take them in stride and although they fear the 'Big
One' (the predicted catastrophic quake that is expected sometime in the
future), small earthquakes are laughed off and joked about (to the amazement
of wide eyed visitors).

Can Central United States Survive An Earthquake? Nature unleashes
its most destructive wrath in the form of a powerful earthquake, emergency

the Central United States in the near future, scores of businesses may find
themselves thrust into a struggle for survival amid the mass of ruin and
destruction.

Living on Shaky Ground: How to Survive Earthquakes and Tsunamis on the North
Coast Anyone who has lived on or near the North Coast knows that
earthquakes are a fact of life in our area. The level of earthquake activity
during the last five years has been higher than at any other time this
century (see graph below), with more large earthquakes than any other region
of the United States. Five earthquakes caused significant damage in the Cape
Mendocino area. In December 1994, Humboldt Bay residents were jarred by a
magnitude 5.4 earthquake and discovered that a moderate event beneath our
feet can be much more significant than a big one farther away. Inland
residents of the historically quiet Klamath Falls area discovered they were
not immune to natures movements; all parts of the western United States are
truly earthquake country, especially the North Coast.

EARTHQUAKES IN NEVADA and how to survive them The State of Nevada
is located in "earthquake country". It lies within the Basin and Range
province, one of the most seismically active regions in the United States.
Along with California and Alaska, Nevada ranks in the top three states
subject to the most large earthquakes over the last 150 years.
Cascadia Subduction Zone Earthquake Dr. Buford P. Foonis, eminent
professor of Geology, has predicted that an earthquake will occur along the
central portion of the Cascadia Subduction Zone within the next 7 to 10
days. Dr. Foonis indicates that the quake will occur in the vicinity of Gold
Beach, Oregon, with a magnitude of 8.8 to 9.2 on the Richter scale. Since
this easily qualifies as a major event, widespread damage can be
anticipated. Local agencies are meeting in Grants Pass to determine what, if
anything, can and/or should be done to protect the citizens and property of
our area.
