World What would happen to the
world's coastlines if the West Antarctic Ice Sheet melted, raising global sea
levels by as much as 20 feet? Some scientists say a collapse is inevitable,
possibly even imminent.
Apocalypse Now: How Mankind is Sleepwalking to the End of the Earth by Geoffrey Lean: Floods, storms and droughts. Melting Arctic ice, shrinking glaciers, oceans turning to acid. The world's top scientists warned last week that dangerous climate change is taking place today, not the day after tomorrow. You don't believe it? Then, says Geoffrey Lean, read this...

Heatwave: Advice for care home
managers and staff - Extreme heat is dangerous to everyone, ESPECIALLY OLDER
PEOPLE, AND ESPECIALLY THOSE LIVING IN CARE HOMES. During a heatwave, when
temperatures remain abnormally high over more than a couple of days, it can
prove fatal. Climate change means heatwaves are likely to become more common in
England. In one hot nine day spell in South East England in August 2003, there
were nearly 2000 extra deaths. The biggest increase in risk of death was among
those in care homes.
Heat Wave Awareness Project:
Because heat waves are slow and silent, media coverage of and public education
on heat waves are scarce. However, heat waves have widespread impacts. This web
page has been designed to provide information on heat wave mitigation,
preparation, vulnerability, and resources to help fill the current void in heat
wave awareness.
Greenhouse
Effect Explains
the causes of the greenhouse effect, and the difference between global warming
and ozone depletion. Discover some possible solutions. The greenhouse effect
results from "the dirty of the atmospheric infrared window" by some
atmospheric trace gases, permitting incoming solar radiation to reach the
surface of the Earth unhindered but restricting the outward flow of infrared
radiation. These atmospheric trace gases are referred as greenhouse gases. They
absorb and reradiate this outgoing radiation, effectively storing some of the
heat in the atmosphere, thus producing a net warming of the surface. The process
is called the greenhouse effect.
MANY
SCIENTISTS BELIEVE RUNAWAY GREENHOUSE POSSIBLE.
A Greenpeace poll shows that a worryingly
high proportion of climate scientists believe it possible that continuing
emissions of greenhouse gases can awaken synergistic feedbacks capable of
generating a runaway greenhouse effect.
Greenhouse
Gases and Climate Change. Greenhouse gases have been accumulating in the
atmosphere since the industrial revolution, almost 250 years ago. Where are
these gases coming from? Are they changing the climate?

"What If
All the Ice Melts?" Myths and Realities ~ by Wm. Robert Johnston. [last
updated 29 December 2005] Currently the Earth has permanent ice in the icecaps
of Antarctica and Greenland, plus much smaller permanent glaciers in various
mountain regions of the world. This ice is "permanent", however, only over the
short time span of modern human civilization. Additionally there are two large
ice sheets floating in seas off Antarctica, plus floating pack ice in the Arctic
Ocean and surrounding Antarctica. Geological evidence indicates very clearly
that at times in the Earth's past icecaps were much larger in extent--and
alternately, at other times icecaps were virtually nonexistent.
"Global
Warming – Latest Evidence" an encapsulation of the latest evidence on
global warming, published in reports issued in February and early April by the
Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. The UN's top scientific authority on
global warming is meeting in Bangkok this week and will issue its third report
on Friday, this time touching on ways of tackling greenhouse-gases.
Intergovernmental
Panel on Climate Change
The Intergovernmental
Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has been established by WMO and UNEP to
assess scientific, technical and socio- economic information relevant for
the understanding of climate change, its potential impacts and options for
adaptation and mitigation. It is open to all Members of the UN and of WMO.
Centre
Health & Global Environment (Harvard)
The Center is an official United Nations Environment Program collaborating
center. The Center also educates policy-makers on human health and the
global environment by organizing international policy-maker education
initiatives, holding briefings on Capitol Hill and by hosting a two-day
intensive course for senior congressional staff.

Pew
Centre on Climate Change The Pew
Center on Global Climate Change was established in 1998 as a non-profit,
non-partisan and independent organization. The Center's mission is to provide
credible information, straight answers, and innovative solutions in the effort
to address global climate change. Working on an issue that is often polarized
and politicized, the Pew Center provides a forum for objective research and
analysis and for the development of pragmatic policies and solutions. In its
first eight years, the Pew Center has become a leading voice for sensible action
to address the most pressing global environmental problem of the 21st century.

Global Warming FAQ The term Global
Warming describes the observed and projected increase in globally averaged
temperatures over time. Because the global climate is a dynamic system, global
warming has occurred in the past and will occur in the future. Using surface
station temperature measurements and satellite-based measurements, researchers
have identified an increasing trend in the global average surface air
temperatures.
Greenpeace
on Climate Change Greenpeace is
asking you to take part in an energy revolution. To go from a world powered
by nuclear and fossil fuels to one running on renewable energy. Human caused
climate change is a reality. Fortunately, there are proven energy solutions
we can put to use today to provide sustainable development and energy for
all.

Global
Warming Debate The fun in science is
to explore a topic from all angles and figure out how something works. To do
this well, a scientist learns to be open-minded, ignoring prejudices that
might be imposed by religious, political or other tendencies (Galileo being
a model of excellence). Indeed, science thrives on repeated challenge of any
interpretation, and there is even special pleasure in trying to find
something wrong with well-accepted theory. Such challenges eventually
strengthen our understanding of the subject, but it is a never-ending
process as answers raise more questions to be pursued in order to further
refine our knowledge. Skepticism thus plays an essential role in scientific
research, and, far from trying to silence skeptics, science invites their
contributions. So too, the global warming debate benefits from traditional
scientific skepticism.
A
Primer on Climate Change The
Government of Canada is committed to the development and implementation of a
Made-in-Canada plan for reducing greenhouse gases and ensuring clean air,
water, land and energy for Canadians. The Made-in-Canada approach will be
effective, realistic and focus on achieving sustained reductions in
emissions in Canada while ensuring a strong economy. The Government will
develop solutions that have clear environmental benefits to Canada and
improve our ability to market new technologies around the world.

Vital Climate Graphics Vital Climate
Graphics are based on the reports of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate
Change (IPCC), which was established by the United Nations Environment
Program and the World Meteorological Organization. The IPCC's 1995 Second
Assessment Report is widely respected as the most authoritative source of
climate change information available. More recently, the IPCC has also
published a number of Special Reports on specific topics. Vital Climate
Graphics will be updated after the forthcoming Third Assessment Report,
scheduled for publication in 2001, becomes available. In this way, they will
continue to be an effective tool for decision-making for years to come.
PBS
on the Global Warming Debate (Many)
Scientists agree that the earth's temperature has risen. But how much worse
will it get? And, is human activity a factor in the warming? Here are
interviews with leading proponents and skeptics of global warming's threat.
These interviews were conducted by FRONTLINE/NOVA producer Jon Palfreman.
Union
of Concerned Scientists on Global Warming
UCS was founded in 1969 by faculty members and students at the Massachusetts
Institute of Technology who were concerned about the misuse of science and
technology in society. Their statement called for the redirection of
scientific research to pressing environmental and social problems.
