Winter
Storms Are you ready for a Winter
Storm? Winter storms bring ice, snow, cold temperatures, and often dangerous
driving conditions. Even small amounts of snow and ice can cause severe problems
for southern states where winter storms are infrequent. See also

Natural SCIENCE
Cover Story: A New European Ice Age? Recent
research shows that unabated carbon dioxide emissions may result in a collapse
of ocean overturning, the main heat source for much of Europe.
A
New European Ice Age? - Letter to natural SCIENCE Your
cover
story of November 1 describes a "new European ice age," based on
the idea that greenhouse warming will increase precipitation in the North
Atlantic to such an extent as to disrupt the thermohaline circulation. Thomas
Stocker and Andreas Schmittner ("Influence of carbon dioxide emission rates
on the stability of the thermohaline circulation," Nature,
388:862--865, 1997) have done an instructive calculation based on a rather
simple ocean-atmosphere model. They indicate that sudden irreversible changes in
circulation are possible in response to a rapid rise in greenhouse gases.
Scientist
Refutes Notion of Recent Climate as "Uniquely Benign" - Sees Evidence of
Approaching Ice Age Despite Global Warming:
by Kurt Sternlof. Paleoclimatologists agree that during
the 10,000 years since the end of the last ice age - a period known as the
Holocene - Earth has enjoyed a relatively warm and stable climate. During this
period human civilizations blossomed into global dominance. The question now is
whether another ice age is on its way? And if so, when?
Into the cold?
Slowing ocean circulation could presage dramatic – and chilly – climate change:
By Robert C. Cowen | Special to The Christian Science Monitor - Call it global
warming's dirty little secret. Those much-publicized scenarios of how
carbon-dioxide (CO2) pollution may gradually heat up the earth don't tell you
another key fact: that climate has sometimes changed without warning. It can go
from warm to cold – or cold to warm – in less than decade, and stay that way for
centuries.
Forget warming - beware the new ice age: Lawrence Solomon, Financial Post
Published: Friday, June 15, 2007 - In the 1970s, leading scientists claimed that
the world was threatened by an era of global cooling. Based on what we've
learned this decade, says George Kukla, those scientists - and he was among them
-- had it right. The world is about to enter another Ice Age.
Does the Ice Age Cometh? ~ Phil Brennan, Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2001 - It's cold
out there, colder than it's been in a long time – so cold that low-temperature
records are falling like snowflakes in a blizzard. In an era when the likes of
Dan Rather and the coterie of global warming propagandists are warning us that
the Earth is about to become a huge barbecue pit, the current cold wave should
be a wake-up call, a sign that the blast furnace may not be the sign of the
future after all.
The
Approaching Ice Age Throughout history the climate of the
Earth
has undergone numerous colossal changes that have in turn affected the various
forms of life that have inhabited this small oasis. The survival of these
organisms has been determined by their ability to adapt to the changing
environments which are often influenced by even the smallest changes in climate.
The Earth
has experienced eras ranging from tropical periods to
ice
ages with everything else in between. This raises a critical question of not
“will the Earth’s
climate change again causing species to compete for survival,” but rather,
“when will it happen?” According to
geological
evidence one of the most likely transformations that will occur relatively
soon will be a gradual movement towards another
Ice
Age. This paper will demonstrate the characteristics of previous
Ice
Ages, factors that have contributed to them, and how several possible
components could serve as catalysts to initiate yet another.
Ice
Age Is a New Ice Age Under Way? by Laurence Hecht “Watch
out, Al Gore. The glaciers will get you!” With that appended note, my friend,
retired field geologist Jack Sauers, forwarded to me a report that should have
been a lead item in every newspaper in the world. It was the news that the
best-measured glacier in North America, the Nisqually on Mount Rainier, has been
growing since 1931.
Aswan
Dam Could Trigger Ice Age Egypt's
Aswan Dam could cause such oceanic and climatic changes that they trigger a new
ice age, according to reports Thursday. Bob Johnson, of the University of
Minnesota in the United States, said in the "New Scientist" magazine
that his theory, which he described as "pretty far out ... but quite
serious", has been backed by researchers at Colorado and Quebec
universities.
Global
Cooling -- Newsweek Magazine Article from Newsweek magazine in 1975
discussing the perils of global cooling. There are ominous signs that the
Earth’s weather patterns have begun to change dramatically and that these
changes may portend a drastic decline in food production– with serious political
implications for just about every nation on Earth.
