Near drowning is the at least temporarily survival of asphyxia caused by immersion in fluid, usually water. Near drowning can cause complications up to death and should always be checked by medical professionals. Secondary drowning is death due to chemical changes in the lungs after a near drowning incident or exposure to chemicals.

RIVER RESCUE Of the many situations that Search & Rescue volunteers may expose themselves to, River Rescue offers the greatest danger of a rescuer being killed. Drownproofing is a water survival technique which was invented by Fred Lanoue, swimming coach at Georgia Institute of Technology from 1936 to 1964. Coach Lanoue believed that everyone should be able to survive in water and developed a simple technique which was easy to learn and did not depend on physical strength or intensive training.
