The Survivalist Pledge:
To help all that can be helped,
To defend all that can be defended,
To save all that can be saved,
To free all that seek freedom,
To stay alive as long as I can and stay free as long as I live.
I was able to attend the annual combined conference of the American Civil
Defense Association, Doctors for Disaster Preparedness and High Frontier, held
in Arlington, VA, September 29-October 2. Its theme was "Preparedness: Path
to Peace." General Douglas McArthur was fond of saying "Wars are
created by undefended wealth!" Alas, despite Russia's economic difficulties
of late, they still have four missile assembly lines going, producing ICBMs;
they are still working full-speed on their anti-missile system, the keystones of
which are the radars at Kraysnorsk, Siberia. It is not prudent for us to be a
tempting target. If you would have peace, prepare for war!
On display at the conference were two steel blast and radiation shelters made
from eight foot diameter, 30 foot long scrap diesel fuel tanks (the EPA is
making the oil companies switch to fiberglass tanks). These shelters, when
buried ten feet deep, would save 100 percent of the people taking refuge in them
over one mile from ground zero from the largest hydrogen bombs in the current
Soviet arsenal, according to the Oak Ridge scientists. In many areas, people
would survive as close as one-half mile from the explosion if the soil contained
gravel and was well drained. Cost is only around $300 per person in such a
shelter. One of these shelters had been made by the Oregon Institute of Science
and Medicine and donated to the Federal Emergency Management Agency as a
training aide. Another belonged to the state of Pennsylvania, and a third, a
fiberglass shelter, was for sale (manufactured by Theta Technologists, 128 A
hall St., Concord, NH 03301).
The first night of the conference vandals spray-painted the shelters with
anti-war slogans and the words "Green Peace." The seal of the United
States and the Pennsylvania state seal were almost obliterated. How can anyone
be so foolish as to damage government property whose sole purpose is to save
lives and teach others to save their own lives? And how can anyone call it
"provocative" for us to protect the lives of our own citizens when the
Soviets, Chinese, Swedes, Norwegians, Fins, and Swiss have shelters for most or
all of their people who live in target areas? Let's face it, the KGB wants us to
stand naked and defenseless so we can easily be enslaved. Even here in Brevard
"useful idiots" have stolen the two copies of Nuclear War Survival
Skills (written by Cresson Kearny at and for the Oak Ridge National Laboratory)
that I donated to help citizens protect themselves and their families. Again, it
is not prudent for us to be a tempting target. If we would have peace, we should
prepare for war!
DON'T BE FOOLED:
When a gun is used by criminals, it's big news and a statistic. But most
often when a gun saves lives, it never gets in the news and is not a statistic.
In most cases, a gun saves lives and prevents crime without being fired and, in
many cases, not even being pointed at anyone. The deterrent effect of a gun or
possibility of a gun being present in the hands of a citizen deters thousands of
potential robberies, home invasions, rapes, and murders each year. Since nothing
exciting or violent happened, it's not news, even if it does get reported to the
police. When a criminal encounters an armed citizen, he almost always runs and,
in most cases, the honest citizen is afraid to report the incident. Most city
dwellers know of cases when the sight of a gun or just making a criminal think
there might be a gun present has prevented a crime.
Home invasion (where criminals enter the home while the resident is home) is
a fairly rare crime because the criminal has to consider the fifty/fifty
possibility that the resident will be armed. Gun legislation could take this
deterrent away and open the door--your door--to home invasion crime. Only gun
ownership guarantees the equal right to survival to all men and women of all
races, religions, ages, and economic status. A ball bat or frying pan is no
substitute for a firearm when the lives of your family are at stake.
No, we can't provide statistics on how many lives guns save, but there are
many. And they are the lives of good, responsible, and productive citizens. We
don't want to find out how many lives are saved the hard way--by taking guns
away from citizens and leaving them to die. The fact is that CRIME GOES UP WHEN
GUN OWNERSHIP GOES DOWN.
CRIME GOES DOWN WHEN GUN OWNERSHIP GOES UP. Don't be fooled by
media hype and politicians' double talk!
