Introduction. OF late there has been a notable improvement in brickwork in the United States, yet the use of moulded and enriched bricks is by no means so general as the variety of shapes obtainable warrants. This has been largely due to the difficulty of finding forms suitable for a given place. This book has been prepared to overcome the difficulty so far as it affects the product of "Hydraulic-press" brick companies, and to afford suggestions as to their use in architectural compositions. It is hoped that the separation of the several kinds of bricks into groups (e.g. jambs, arches, bases, cornices, etc.) attempted in Part Second, will facilitate the selection of those desired from among the large number of profiles there shown. The thanks of the companies are due to Mr. Frank Miles Day, under whose direction this book has been prepared, and from whose collection the illustrations have been selected.
