The American
Standard Version (ASV) of the Holy Bible was first published in
1901. It has earned the reputation of being the Rock of Biblical
Honesty. Although the English used in the ASV is somewhat
archaic, it isn't nearly as hard to understand as some passages of the
King James Version of nearly 3 centuries earlier. This translation of
the Holy Bible is in the public domain, since its copyright has
expired. You are encouraged to download, copy, and use this translation
freely. With some simple word replacements and a
few grammatical adjustments, this would make a good Modern English Bible
that could be kept in the public domain. This is being done with a new
translation called the
World
English Bible.

Author
of Genesis Although Moses has traditionally been considered the author
of Genesis, modern scholars generally agree that the book is a composite of at
least three different literary strands: J (10th century BC), E (9th century),
and P (5th century). The interpretation of the book has led to many
controversies. One of the most difficult problems has been distinguishing
historical fact from symbolic narration intended to convey a religious message.
Sons of God,
Daughters of Men The copy of the Genesis Apocryphon discovered at
Qumran dates back to the 2nd century B.C., but it was obviously based on much
older sources. When discovered in 1947, it had been much mutilated from the
ravages of time and humidity. The sheets had become so badly stuck together that
years passed before the text was deciphered and made known. When scholars
finally made public its content, the document confirmed that celestial beings
from the skies had landed on planet Earth. More than that, it told how these
beings had mated with Earth-women and had begat giants.
MESOPOTAMIAN
TRADITION OF THE FLOOD The story of a devastating flood is a key element in a number of Mesopotamian compositions. In the literary-historical work popularly known as the Sumerian King List, which probably dates in its original form to the early second millennium BC, a flood separates antediluvian dynasties ruling from the cities of Eridu, Babtibira, Sippar, Larak, and Shuruppak, all of whose kings had reigns of fantastic length, from a longer list of dynasties ruling from nine different cities, the first after the flood being Kish. After Kish, kingship was transferred to Uruk and the later kings of the dynasty include Enmerkar, Lugalband, and Gilgamesh, figures well known from Mesopotamian literature.
Manitoba
geologist thinks he's found evidence of Noah's flood
WINNIPEG (CP) -- The Arabian desert, one of
the driest places on Earth, may seem an odd place to look for evidence of what's
supposed to have been the greatest deluge in history. But
a Manitoba geologist thinks he and an international team have found scientific
proof that a nearby area was flooded, at the end of the last ice age, as the
story of Noah and other ancient tales have suggested.
Ancient
Choctaw Legend of the Great Flood... One of the most interesting things in history is the fact that almost every race, however remote may be its habitation on the face of the earth has a tradition of the Great Flood similar in many respects to the account given us in the early portion of our Bible. But stranger yet is the fact that when the earliest explorers came to the shores of America, they found traditions of a great flood in the folklore of many Indian tribes. Some of the traditions have a remarkable likeness to the Bible account, and while a few of them were later changed or influenced by contact with Europeans, it is doubtless true that the American Indians must have learned of the Great Flood long before Columbus first touched the shores of San Salvador. Who knows but that the story in its various forms may have been carried down through the ages from the time when the ancestors of the American Indian lived in Asia? And is not the general prevalence of this remarkable legend a proof of Paul's statement that God "hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth"?
The "seven
deadly sins" The table below lists The Seven Deadly Sins
(vices) in the traditional order with the virtues against which they are sins.
The history of this list goes back at least to Pope St. Gregory the Great and
St. John Cassian, but while the list itself is not strictly biblical, the Bible
proscribes all seven. If one or more of these doesn't seem like a big sin to
you, it almost certainly means you have already rationalized it...
